New PC auto-restarts??

Greetings,
Was hoping to get some insight on why my new PC I just built automatically restarts from time to time. First, my specs:
-Core2 6600 @ 2.4
-2 GB Crucial
-Windows XP Pro SP2
-MSI 975x platinum board
-Turbolink 500W PS
-GForce 7950 GT 512mb
-Raptor 10K rpm HDD

...Um, I think that's all the relevant info, let me know if I'm leaving anything out. Anyways, it runs beautifully 95% of the time. But occasionally, at ostensibly random times, it will just restart. Sometimes, it's in the middle of playing a game. Sometimes, it's at night when I'm asleep, and there are no tasks running at all. Sometimes, it's when I'm reading e-mail. It restarts, then I get the simple Windows error message, "The system has recovered from a serious error." And this happens maybe 2-3 per week, since I built the PC a month ago.

I doubt this will help, but if anyone can interpret the error signature... its "BCCode : 100000d1 BCP1 : 1000A8DC BCP2 : 00000002 BCP3 : 00000000

Also, I have Speedfan, which is supposedly a temp monitor, but I sort of doubt its accuracy. It has my system temp average at about 40-42C, which, right or not, gives me a good idea of the relative temp.

Hello Zac,

Heat related issues cause shutdowns rather than restarts, so don't worry about an overheating issue.

Restarts without warning can be caused by bad memory. Insufficient power causes crashes vastly more often than restarts so we shouldn't worry about power for now. We could also be looking at a motherboard problem.

I've attached a memory tester you can use from within windows. It has worked for me in the past when scanning my old PNY ram for errors. Memory is the most likely culprit at this point so run the program for a couple of hours or so and the moment you come up with any errors you'll know it's the RAM. I don't expect there'll be many errors in yours if it restarts infrequently like you mentioned, but one error in RAM can be enough to play tricks on your PC.

Thanks a lot for the input. I ran it only for about 4 hours last night, using all my available ram (not 100% of it) and didn't encounter any errors. Same with 20min, 1 hour. I am going to try it tonight for a longer period of time (hopefully I'll get more sleep tonight :)). I think you may be on to something though, since it happens rather infrequently, it may be a while before I can find the error.

And forgive my noobish questions, but what am I looking for in the event viewer? Do you mean give you the info under system > error if I have a memory error? Thanks a lot for the help.

With Event Viewer, users can monitor events recorded in the Application, Security, and System logs;
Go through each thing.. double click the latest errors on all these areas and paste them here...

When/If you figure out what the problem was here, messege me if you can, I'm having similar issues, but the closest hardware we have is my MSI K9N Platinum MoBo.

This sounds to me as though your powersupply isnt stable. I havent heard of turbolink before and cant comment, however me not hearing of the company isnt really a good sign as i tend to keep onto of who is good etc.
If your powersupply isnt stable then it will usually cause the system to reset. Is there any particular time this happens such as using a CD drive or whilst gaming, anything that may require a bit more power than usual. Also the amount of good components youve got, can become very power hungry, i suggest buying something such as Hiper, Antec, Enermax as these are very good, stable powersupplys and will provide your pc with all the juice they need... 500watts and above will be needed to run your pc's configuration

about the power supply problem, I have a crap "Rated" 500 watts power supply, from a cheap company named sumvision, when i used to have 4 optical drives connected, and 2 hard drives, and my reasonably powerful system, it used to restart or crash for absolutely no reason, and when i only had 2 drives running along with one hard drive, it was fine, not a problem ever since.

I see you have an nvidia geforce... if you force anti aliasing or other options "not including Vsync or single display perfomance mode" I found that it makes games that use the HL1 engine, such as counter strike make it crash, and ever since i`d left the settings alone, apart from forcing vsync off and putting the monitor setting to single display perfomance mode, I have not had a crash since.
