New RAM in my lappy - very flaky

I ebayed a 1Gb sodimm for my laptop (Fujitsu Siemens V5535). Looking at the specs on the dimm it's faster than the one that's already in there (PC6400 v PC 5500 or somesuchlike) .

However
boot screen displays new ram OK
PC wont boot with just the new dimm in
linux distro (lubuntu) wont boot
Windows (Vista) very flaky (sometimes boots, drivers often crash)
memory tester that installs with ubuntu gives it the all clear.

Suggestions please :-)
 
Did you install the new memory along with the ones currently installed? When you install memory with different speeds, your system will run with the lowest speeds out of the two. So although you think you're running at 6400, your actually running at 5500. And if you bought something less than 5500, you'd be running at that. And that might be the cause of the issue, even though this setup is allowed. How much memory do you have installed at the moment?
 
The existing RAM is 1x 1Gb SODIMM @ PC5300 I believe...
the new stick has the same configuration (1 x 1Gb) @ PC6400

Seems you have added the new RAM, wiser thing would be to swap your old one with the new one. If RAMs operate at different clock speed, system uses the one with the lowest.
Also, you need to check if the new RAM is compatible with you Laptop.

Very true. What is the model of your laptop? Does it support 2Gb RAM? I'm assuming your laptop is old since before upgrading RAM, you only had 1x1Gb of RAM from an unknown manufacturer.
