newb to overclocking ....400064

Could anyone suggest if its worth overclocking my cpu, i have box standard 400064 san diago.
7800gtx
2 gigs of corsair xms
raptor 36hd

im getting 3d mark 05 standard bench test (8190)do you think its possible to get around 9,000 with a bit of tampering.

my cpu temp atm is 39 oc on desk standard heatsink & fan.
my gpu is averaging 53 oc on desk
i have 580 watt psu.

I could do with some professional help on overclocking if its worth doing. im very new to this & dont quiete understand the guides & how the pc works with voltages atc.:confused:

i would like to over clock it just enough to make a difference & keep is 100% stable without overheating & without changing any voltages.

reason for overclocking ) im looking forward to playing brother's in arms hells highway & not sure if my cpu is pushing my gpu enough to run it on higher settings....

any help much appreciated i havnt a clue & would like that bit extra performance thx.
 
Honestly, if I were you I would not worry about overclocking. It is potentially harmful to your CPU to overclock and and may not even be worth your time. You should try to play the game as is and if you are still having problems, then worry about overclocking. Anyway, that's my advice. Good luck.

ok...but would you think my cpu would handle the upcomming dx 10 cards comming soon? im hoping hit the 12,000 barrier on 3d mark 05...:rolleyes:
 
Your processor doesn't really have to handle video cards at all. You have a pretty beefy system so I'd say you're system is going to do you pretty good for a little while.
 
:P so if i have the next gen cards such as dx 10 on my pc , my 400064 should run it ok & get better frames per second on upcomming games?

friends of mine keep telling me that its the processor that pushes the graphics card to give more frames,& if i dont have a good processor,the graphics card wont perform to its full potential...:(

i have another question thats been bugging me for a while...i installed a raptor 36gb hard drive & in the bios it shows up as third master,i have win xp installed on it. my second drive is ide and shows up as secondry i think, im wondering why the raptor shows as ide third master when its my primary drive...do i need to change something.

my mother board is msi n force 4 platinum.
 
The only thing you have to worry about with dx10 cards is your OS. Dx10 cards needs Vista as your OS.
 
yeh i knew about the vista, thats what im waiting for , soon as vista comes il get it then go for the dx 10 cards if i have enough cash....

do you think its possible il break the 12,000 3d mark05 with the dx 10 cards with my 400064.:D

il probably sell my 7800gtx 256mb 3500 golden sample graphics if i can get much better benchmarks
 
3DMark is more centered around video cards than the CPU. This isn't to say the CPU won't help, but do understand that you might not get the boost you're hoping for by doing so.

You're friend isn't exactly wrong about the role of a CPU in gaming, but don't apply it to every game across the board. Some games are more graphically intense than others. I have a Athlon 3000+ and a GeForce 6600GT. If we put a GeForce 2 MX in your box and played FEAR, my rig would trample all over yours. It's not because of the CPU, it's because the video card in this scenario lacks the power to run that type of game. A good CPU is important, but if you're gaming, the video card is going to be a helluva lot more important.

A DX10 video card doesn't mean you'd be able to break 12k in 3DMark. As with the current and past generations of cards, there's been several different offerings in a product family, so if you snagged the low-end GeForce DX10 card, you would have DX10, but it'd be questionable wether you'd run Crysis that well on it.

Benchmarks are nice, but you should understand that 3DMark is not based on any game engine in use, so basing your computer's speed around it alone isn't a good way to go. I won't deny that it's fun, but do keep it in perspective. 3DWangMark is worthless if you can't play real games.

As far as your hard drive, that's just the way the controllers are initialized, and there's nothing you can do about it. If your installed drive is something other than C, you can't change it as Windows does not allow you to change the drive letter of the OS drive. The only way to do that would be to unplug your other hard drives, reinstall Windows on the SATA drive, and then hook the other hard drives back up again. And I'm sure that's not what you'd really want to do.

In theory, the DX10 cards should break new records, what they're really capable of is unknown. Outside of they'll be faster, I have no clue. Wait for the benchmarks to hit.
 
ok........i have 1 final question about my system,

i have msi sli platinum board and the gainward 7800gtx 3500 golden sample graphics card.........how about if i want to put another card in to use sli , can i use any brand of 7800gtx to go with it,cuz i cant find another golden sample yet.....thankew
