Sudo has uses, but I rarely have to think "Should I use sudo or su?" when I'm doing administration or installing kernels etc. I haven't been hacked yet . I was actually referring to the way graphical programs use the sudo method instead of asking for the root password. This si the way Debian and most other distros do it.
The "unofficial starter guide" may help you also. There is a link to the 'dapper' version also if you are using that version (6.06). Everything there should apply to kubuntu as well, but if you have questions, just ask. Good luck
