no 80 conductor cable installed

Hi all, got a few questions, just after my pc detects the drives etc it gives me that error, but it flashes by so fast i cant see what drive its talking about. My questions are, how do i see the error message before it disappears (so i know what cable to change), does it write it to a file somewhere? Secondly, is it to do with there only being a 40 pin cable on this ide channel? This is probably a really stupid question but how do i tell an 80 pin ide cable from a 40 pin? I got quite a few ide cables laying around so chances are i already got an 80 pin. Lastly is it worthwhile putting in the 80 pin (maybe another stupid question) will it speed anything up ?

Any help very much appreciated.
 
Hey, I dont know alot about this error message.... all i can say is that my old motherboard used to say the same (happend after i removed and replaced my ram), it never seemed to make any diffrence tho.

If you want to read the error message, think low tec! use a phone (etc) to make a vidoe of the screen as the computer boots up.... and pause it when the error appears on the screen (pause the video)

That error message usually appears when it doen't detect a 80 Conductor SATA cable installed but is nothing to worry about!
An easier way to view the message is to press pause on your keyboard and then enter to continue the boot process!
 
hi m8 there are two typres of "ide" a 40 pin conducter and an 80 pin conduter they both do the same job and work with the same drives however the 80 conducter cables do it slightly quicker as the have 2 cables per data channel. to tell which cable u have count the amount on wires across the ide cable in your computer. also check all the connections. but iit sounds like one of your cables have a slight fault. Did u say all your drives work?? post back Dave :cool:
 
Firstly thanks for the help :D Yep all the drives worked fine.

It was the secondary IDE channel, which has the dvd writer on, put in a new IDE cable and the message is gone, will it speed up anything?
 
well u might not notice any difference in speed, other than booting up, however the quality and realiability of your dvd writer will propbly increase as the old cable was faulty. Cheers Dave :cool:
 
Just get an 80-conductor ribbin cable, they only cost a couple bucks. It will increase the maximum speed of drives connected from 33MHz to 133MHz -- big difference!
