No Recordable Devices Found

First of all i would like to say hello to everyone on this forum as its my first visit. I am sorry if this is posted on the wrong board .

I use Sonic for DVD burning etc but today when i tried to use it i got this message........."No compatible Recordable or Rewritable devices could be found on your system. Would you like to check if an update is available?"
Ideas ?

Just checked to make sure my drives are working and they are fine. Well , they both play dvd's etc.
Just reinstalled it too but its still the same.

After further investigation , ive found that the Packard bell Smart restore master cd creator says "no cd writer detected"
Also , under "my computer" i have two disc drive icons but only one of them has a dvd symbol when in fact one is a dvd/cd drive and one is a dvd/cd re-writer
I dont want to do another format and i was willing to just leave it and use Nero (which works fine) to burn my dvd's but now ive noticed the problem elsewhere.

Can i add that ive just downloaded the latest version of Sonic but its still the same. It cant pick up my drives Nero works fine and doesnt have a problem with my drives. This is driving me nuts.:swear:

I have a Packard Bell PC with XP home edition.

Yes. Everything is fine under device manager. I tried to update the driver but it said it was fine.
 
ok, remove the DVDr drive from device manager then shutdown the system and unplug the IDE cable from your DVDr drive then turn on the computer go through the boot process and make sure the DVDr drive is missing from device manager, then shutdown and reconnect your DVDr to the IDE cable and boot as normal and XP will redetect it

if this doesn't work try replacing the IDE cable

P.S. make sure the jumper settings on the drives are correct

Cheers mate :cool: I will try this later when the kids are in bed and report back with the results.
 
You mentioned that Nero does work at the moment? If that's the case, your hardware configuration is fine

So there's no need to mess with the inner workings of your PC. I'd look into Sonic's configuration settings. I am not familiar with this program, so I can't advise where to look.

BTW, what's wrong with using Nero?
 
i must start reading EVERYTHING instead of just skimming over the text and just presuming i think i know what the problem is, sorry sleeping giant, and thank you mega (again)

EDIT: yeah use nero or CD BurnerXP "excellent" and its freeware

Hiya , there is nothing wrong with using Nero its just that ive been using Sonic for years and suddenly its stopped picking up my drive. I'm puzzled more than anything :ohah: Im thinking ive maybe deleted the link from Sonic to my Drive (if that makes sense).

Its still nagging away at me so i'm going to disconect then reconect my drive later. I havent had a chance yet.
I shall report back with results :cool:
 
People , thak you all very much for all your help. Would you believe it , i turned on my comp to uninstall the driver but the bloody thing was working fine again:D
I cleaned out the air slots on my tower as they were minging and the fan was blowing hot air out of the back vent. Could this have been my problem do you think ? Something to do with temperature maybe ?
