My Acer 3600GT sounds like my vacuum cleaner. I would appreciate any thoughts on replacing the cooler fan with something very much quieter.

Sounds like your bearings are shot.What size fans does it have it? I would look at Thermaltake fans, I have two of them in my computer, they are quite quite.
