ntfs.sys is missing or corrupted

Big Geek
Hi,

I'm getting a message as XP SP3 starts to boot saying that windows\system32\drivers\ntfs.sys is missing or corrupt. I've done the usual copying it off the CD in the recovery console from both D:\i386 and C:\windows\servicepackfiles\i386, neither work.

Also tried copying it from another XP SP3 installation via Windows 7, with no luck! Memtest says there are no errors. chkdsk fixed a load of errors, but still not working! I'll be trying a repair install tomorrow, but I really would rather not have to do that!

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,

Thomas.

Why do people insist on all that repair crap? A fresh install is always better! And if you are at least a poweruser - make your own edition of XP with nLite. It will install in 20 minutes, even on a 2GHz Celeron.

come on Thomas you should know this

you are correct, this is fixable from the recovery console

what has happened is the MBR is being a tw4t

to fix enter recovery console and run
Code:
chkdsk /r
to fix any errors on HDD

then restore the MBR with
Code:
FIXMBR
and also restore the boot code with
Code:
FIXBOOT
and for good measure
Code:
BOOTCFG /REBUILD
to rebuild the boot configuration[ot]i'm saying you should know this crap & i couldn't find the commands -[/ot]

Sorry for the long delay in replying :D

Donkey, I'd tried them! But still no luck. In the end I had to wipe everything off and do a re-install.

Thanks for everyones help!!

Thomas.
