Nvidia 7600GT @ 256MB

Hey guys, just a quick little question. i remember somewhere on here somebody saying that the nvidia 7600 is a midrange gfx card from nvidias 7 series, but i was wandering if the 7600GT is any good and or is it worth it to get. Right now I have a 6600 @ 256mb. I need to upgrade my gfx card to play the latest games really well, but my current gfx card is the real let down. I just spent money on a monitor as some of you know and I am buying another 1BG ram for the comp, pulling it up to1.5gb (I might just buy 2 1GB ram modules so i'll have 2GB instead of 1.5). Anyways, my budget is a liiitttllee tight atm, but I just want4ed to know spec wise and gfx production wise whether or not the 7600GT@256MB is worth it or not, or should i just wait a little longer and but a 7800??
 
The 7600GS is going to be about the same as a 6600GT or a little faster. Now, the 7600GT is going to offer a major performance boost over your current card. If you're not going to get the 7600GT, don't bother with a 7600 series card given what you have right now.
 
Both cards would actually prove to be a pretty impressive improvement. The 6600 is an 8 pipe card with very low clockspeeds. The 7600GS is a 12 pipe card with improved clockspeeds. And the 7600GT is also 12pipes but has some of the highest clockspeeds you'll ever find in a midrange card. It's a good buy and if you're not too concerned about jumping on a the DX 10 bandwagon this November than I'd say it's a smart choice.
 
Im having the same problem as you. Only, are you limited to AGP?? Because if not, don't get a 7800. Get a 7900 for cheaper.

Another factor that you may or may not have put into consideration is your psu. Is there a possibility that for a 7800 or 7900 you will need to get a new psu?

Well i am not jumpin on the band wagon as u say for DX10 cards, so for me high end 7 series cards is wot I need. Will the 7600GT allow me to run the latest games on full? or should I just get a 7800 card or higher? if the 7600GT allows latest games to run on full then thats wot i'll get.

It depends really what your current PSU is, but, for better and safer performance, yes, essentially u may have to get a better and higher PSU.

Yes, you can play those games pretty well with a 7600GT. For all the talk about what a beast FEAR is, it's actually not as bad since I can run it at 1024x768 and medium detail settings with only a 6600GT. I have no clue about Oblivion, but it doesn't seem to be as bad as some people have made it out to be.

If you're looking to play with detail settings to the max past a resolution of 1280x1024, then you might hold off for the 7950. Also, ATi's Radeon X1950 Pro is coming out in AGP format, and from what I've heard, it's very competitve with the GeForce 7900GS.
 
Judging from my personal experience you should pretty much be able to max Oblivion, FEAR, and COD2 with the GT. I've got a friend with a X850Pro, not quite as powerful as a 7600GT, and he can totally max CO2 and FEAR. I don't ever remember seeing any issues with CoD2, FEAR did occasionally have a stage with some hickups but then again this was with a lesser card with dated drivers. And I watched as another friend maxed Oblivion with his 6800GS, also slightly worse than the 7600GT and it ran moderatly well during outdoor settings with lots of stuff going on. If there's on current game that'd give you trouble though that'd be the one, don't expect it to run like a dream with it all cranked up, it's about as demanding as they come though there are a lot of options to tweak so you'll find a good balence in there for sure.

I think I'll get a 7600GT @ 256 or 512MB for around £120. Do you think that it will be able to run game which will be released in the next year or so reasonably well?? By this I mean more or less max settings if not very very high medium settings... preferably max tho lol :P???
 
A 7600GT should be able to handle pretty much any game released in the next year yes. But there will be exceptions. For starters DX 10 games won't see their full potential and can't be maxed from the get go (but will still look awesome and might run a bit better than if you had actually have been able to turn on the settings) and certain big deal games like Crysis or Unreal Tournament 2007 are going to be very demanding and cutting edge and probably will require a more powerful card to really jack things up.
 
Right I see - the only reason I say this is because I have a GeForce 6600 @ 256MB and thats pretty old now and I do not think it'll be able to handle the next years releases - however, having said that, me getting a GeForce 7600GT will only be temporary, i.e. for about a year until I have enough money to build my super PC. So for now, price wise included and graphics capabilities, would you say its safe to say for the next year that the 7600GT will be a good card to use? By this I also do mean run the latest games at least reasonable well?
 
Yeah I could see that, by next summer we'll be looking at the 7600GT and thinking of it like we do a 6600GT now. It's not a great card but it'll run what anything you need on medium at least. There are naturally other options but I think it's a smart choice to buy the 7600GT now and upgrade big time next year. That way you'll be able to enjoy current an near future games well and by the time you upgrade there will be a decent selection of DX 10 cards and games and Vista to allow for it all to work in tandum. Plus pricing will be more reasonable and some of the kinks will be worked out.
