i cant wait to see performance results on the 7800gt and gtx

this sounds amazing

Hard-core game enthusiae 70sts descending on San Francisco next week will get first crack at buying Nvidia's long-awaited GeForce 7800 graphics cards.

Nvidia confirmed with CNET News.com that it will begin selling the next-generation graphics processors at the company's GeForce LAN 2.0 fan appreciation day on June 21. The event includes a daylong BYOC (bring your own computer) games competition where individuals and teams will play first-person shooter titles including "Doom 3," "Battlefield 2" and "Splinter Cell" over an ad hoc network.

The GeForce 7800 is expected to come in three versions--GTX, GT and Standard--and is the heir apparent to Nvidia's current top-end products--the GeForce 6800 Ultra, 6800 GT, and 6800. The new GeForce series is expected to compete with ATI's upcoming Radeon R520 graphics chip when it debuts in late July.

The GeForce 7800 family, previously code-named G70, is expected to run at clock speeds of around 430MHz, with 1.2GB of double data rate, or DDR memory, sources close to the release said. The core of about 300 million transistors will help the chip compute 24 pixels every time the processor completes a cycle. The transistor boost means one GeForce 7800 GTX card should process graphics as well or better than two GeForce 6800GT cards installed in a PC. The new chips will also come with advanced shading that makes the quality of graphics akin to that of films.

Prices have not been established yet. But based on current pricing trends, graphics chip research analyst Jon Peddie predicts the new graphics boards should retail between $499 and $599.

Previous Next "Whatever the price, this is not going to be an inexpensive board," Peddie said, noting that traditionally, Nvidia customers are 17- to 35-year-old males with disposable income. "I don't think people realize how delighted these guys are whenever a new graphics chip comes out...the first thing that they do is try to get the PC to go faster and the second thing they do is make the graphics look better."

While Nvidia graphics processors are good complements to PCs running Intel's Pentium Extreme Edition products, Peddie said serious game players prefer AMD's Athlon FX single-core family for its faster caching and 64-bit computational abilities.

In addition to selling to game enthusiasts, Nvidia may market a few more of the new graphics cards to game developers, who are also expected to view the GeForce 7800 series with great interest.

Nvidia has a graphics technology it calls SLI that lets users combine two GeForce graphics cards into one system. ATI has a similar technology it calls Crossfire. With two graphic cards installed, Peddie said, developers can improve the performance of their yet-to-be-released games and predict with some accuracy how well Nvidia's next round of GeForce products will perform.

*fires off 21 gun salute*

you still have an alright card probably, just the technology is growing at a rate that very few can keep up with. i have a 9800pro and i thought it was good but to keep up with all these kids that play im going to have to make a move to sli/pci-x and get some off this new stuff coming out. which right now im not willing to do and i will probably just give up gaming for a while.

yeah my cards good for a while, but as you said, the 7800 performs like two of them or better haha

i have a 6800GT

but i can still play games on max cuz my LCD limits me to 1280x1024, so far everything goes good on max

well in theory it will perform better than 2 6800gt's, only problem is the cpu wont handle it and in turn the performance will only be slightly better if at all.

Nice! Great article dude, newegg's already got 'em huh, well let's just hope for nVidia's sake ATI can't eat this one like the X800XT PE did to the 6800 Ultra, that's the tactic they're trying to pull. They release it a couple weeks later and lo and behold it's faster! Then nVidia launches some Extreme editions that just squeeks by the R520 and the battle continues. Shame they haven't bumped the vram up to 512, maybe ATI will? Though it would cost way too much judging my the 6800 Ultra 512 model:(

yeah ati is working on the new r520 core from what i understand so im sure they will try and pull something. i very curious to see how the new core ati chips hold up against the 7800 series. im pretty excitied :)
yeah i really wish the video card makers instead of working so hard on the core for once could concentrate on the memory and find a cheaper way to upgrade it. id love to see these 7800 series or the r520 core chips with like 1g video memory that would be amazing! *drools*

its always gonna be a slaughterfest between nvidia and ati, however i think ati can win a huge piece of the market if their new mobo chipset with crossfire is successful and more powerful that nforce4Sli or Ultra

personally im a hugh ati guy. i like nvidia, but i prefer ati and i always have. just a preference so the crossfire mobo chipset looks awesome and i cant wait till i can get that.

anyone thats interested i have that site bookmarked! :)

Yea the 7800GTX is available at newegg. But what you need is a server board with an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and SLi 7800GTX's, that would be l337 *spits on now sucky X800 Pro*

Server board? I'd stick with a FX57 and traditional Gigabyte/ASUS etc. board myself. Better for games:good:

I still think this with 5 1.6 GHz Itanium 2's, 32 GB RAM, and tri 300 GB 10k RPM HDD's could dish out the pwn4g3. Course then again you might as well buy your own army and play real CS...

EDIT: The server mentioned above configured the way said costs $74,611. No there are no typos, check yourself (there are some options such as a monitor that aren't stated).
EDIT 2: I posted wrong, when I said server board I was going to say dual X2's but I didn't know if there was a motherboard that supported it.

yeah I reckon that would beat my rig by a few frames. That's amazing dude, I had no idea you could spend so much on a single server. Do they have SLI server boards though?

Hope you realised that they were Itaniums in that server. Itaniums cost thousands EACH.
