well folks! my little episode may go to prove (if proof is necessary) the importance of doing one's homework before going off half-cocked!
story is that i rec'd a Celeron D socket 775 chip through the post the other day. i bought it cheap to use as a test chip for any 775 boards that i might buy for building. next, i tested it with a P45 chipset board and it didn't work. went to the asus website (it was a p5q pro) and found that the Celeron D cpu is not supported. yup, should have done that first!:O
i have no reason to believe that the Celeron does not work by the way. i have no other board to test it on though.
first Q is; is it possible to kill the board by mounting an unsupported chip? i'd have thought not, but what is the experience of the forum?
secondly, i mounted a known good 540J that i had used initially to test this board recently....nope, didn't work. in between, i had removed the cmos battery to reset the board. since then, i have reseated/ swapped out the gfx card; memory and psu. nothing!
the board starts up, stops, restarts and the fans keep running indefinitely. removing the heatsink/fan quickly, i feel the ihs; it is warm.
turned the monitor off and on to get "no signal"....disappears on start up as it should but no screen.
any observations welcomed...have i lost the board?:(
thanks in advance
