P5P800 SE Intel INF chipset update problem

Hi. I have just upgraded to an Asus P5P800 SE motherboard. I am having no problems installing windows xp or any other software except the Intel INF chipset update and windows SP2. When I install either of them my display becomes corrupted with horizontal bars with multicoloured pixellation. I can still see some of the desktop in the gaps between the corrupt sections of desktop and I can even restore the system to an earlier state by carefully using the corrupted desktop. However, I have no idea what is causing the problem. Can anyone give me any advice about the problem?
 
What are your system specs, and have you upgraded anything else? Include the power supply's brand and model (specs would also be nice).
 
Specs are:
New P4 Prescott 640 3.2Ghz CPU
512MB Samsung PC2100 DDR RAM
New Antec 480W Trueblue PSU
ATI X850XT PE GPU
Creative Audigy sound card
 
I have got the same prob when installing the intel inf chipset driver on an asus p5p800 motherboard.


system specs:

Intel Prescott P4 3.2GHz
Asus P5P800 Mobo
1GB Corsair PC400
XFX 5700LE 256MB GPU
Creatice Live 5.1 Sound Card
