PC3200 or PC2700 on a Celeron D?

Hi,
How can I use DDR400 (PC3200) in my 915G motherboard with a Celeron D 326 processor? I have a "power error" (continuous beeps) if the PC3200 is installed, but with PC2700 everything works fine. Could I overclock something to get this RAM working?

Continuous beeps mean bad RAM, or RAM not seated properly. Does your PC3200 DDR RAM work in other computers?
 
the memory maybe bad, however what is most likely happening is this:

When you install your PC3200 memory (200Mhz FSB) your motherboard will probably be automatically changing your FSB to run @ PC3200 (200MHz FSB), therefore overclocking your CPU by 67Mhz/134Mhz x whatever-your-multiplier-is-here

What i would do, is change your bios options so that you Manually assign the memory settings, and force the memory to run @ PC2700(333FSB), then save the bios, turn your computer off and install the PC3200 (400FSB), this will then run your PC3200 @ PC2700 (333FSB).

I only suggest this because you are experiencing post code errors (or beeps), these are an indication via the speaker in your case as to a problem, usually over heating if its constant. - Overheating would be caused by your memory assigning your celeron to run @ PC3200 speeds because of your new memory, therefore causing it to overheat.

if this doesnt work, the memory is bad - replace it, if the motherboards bios doesnt have an option to automatically assign the memorys speed, update your motherboards bios version to the latest update.
 
Also if your motherboard is overclocking your memory, because it is automatically running the memory at its retail speed of PC3200 (400FSB / 200Mhz) you'll experience the beeping (post codes) because you're computer will be trying to run memory that is way to overclocked, because it is way to highly overclocked, the memory will be running, but the memory will just be causing errors all the time, hence hte beeping, because the memory will effectively be acting like it is bad memory, because of the overclock.

By doing that, there would be no performance increase using his PC3200. He'd be better off running his PC2700

If you have overclocked the memory too much, you are unlikely to get any kind of beeps. Chances are, your PC won't even turn on, and you'd have to clear the CMOS via the battery jumpers! I should know......:D

First of all he's running a Celeron D, second of all we are trying to fix the problem first, not worry about performance issues.

Actually this is wrong you can have memory that doesn't work at all and you will get "beeps" or post codes as they are called, you're motherboard is connected to the case's internal speaker, and is instructed when it has different errors to provide different "beeps" like morse code, each pattern of beeping is different for each error that occur in the computer.

I should know, i've spent 4 years on these forums now, and work as a Network & Hardware Analyst at the head quarters of an engineering company. :)
