my system:
athlon 3k
1 gig ram
160gig hd (130gig used)
nvidia 6800 (asus 9999)
350watt psu

ive had this system for nearly a year now, and have never got the performance i should be getting out of it. ppl i know with lesser or similar systems getting better fps in the same games i play. i get 25-80 fps in CSS and 60-120 in cod2, everyone tells me this is MUCH less than i should be getting with my system but i cant seem to work out why. i would massively appreciate any help because im quite a serious gamer and its getting in the way of my ownage  , i have tried updating gfx card drivers and a few other things but im no computer expert so i appeal to your almighty knowledge guys.

thanks

What kind of motherboard does that hardware run on? The chipset drivers might need updating, I've had great benefit from updating my ASUS A8V Deluxe VIA chipset in the past, since it also included updated drivers for my agp bus.

Try to be more precise and describe the exact type of components you have like you did with your GFX card.

motherboard is an MSI K7N2 Delta2, RAM is ddr pc 3200 (400) although i think its only running at 200. what exactly are chipset drivers? are they different to display drivers and where do i find them?

thanks

Chipset explained, your motherboard has an nForce 2 chipset. Chipset drivers are indeed different from display drivers, they control various features of your motherboard, such as on-board sound, agp bus, raid support etc.

I read the specifications of your motherboard and saw it supports a "LiveUpdate3" feature, similar to my ASUS update program I think, and it will probably autodetect your motherboard type and find the latest updates for it. Did you try that program before? Do so if you haven't

An Athlon 3000 has a speed of 1,8GHz which isn't very fast anymore these days, CSS is less demanding than COD2 where you get higher fps anyway. Steam games are said to be very CPU dependant so that could be a possible cause of the low fps your experiencing there, and your 6800 card from ASUS is still very good explaining the decent fps you have in COD2, which is a more gfx card dependant game.

You could also try downloading the latest nForce2 drivers from the Nvidia website, under "Platform/nForce drivers, since MSI might not provide the latest drivers from their website.

Good luck

Liveupdate3 features explained;

• The ultimate combo of MSI™ exclusive Live BIOS™, Live Driver™, Live Utility ,Live Monitor.
• Online update BIOS/Driver/Utility.
• Live Monitor auto-detects and suggests the latest BIOS/Driver/Utilities information.

i found liveupdate3 on my motherboard driver cd, all of the drivers it suggest say before installing that i have newer ones already installed. css being more cpu dependant could i suppose explain why i get better fps in cod2 but it still doesnt explain why cod2 fps is still much lower than other ppl with similar systems. thanks alot for your help its much appreciated. i dont have any money for new components so im gonna have to try and tune my current pc up. i know it can produce better performance just have to work out how. any more suggestions would be great

Did you try downloading the latest nForce2 drivers from Nvidia.com? Try running COD2 in DX 7, it might not look as good as DX9 but it will improve performance a lot. See the graphical options ingame, under rendering mode.

As for other people saying you should get better fps with that system, I disagree. My Athlon 64 4000+ with an overclocked 6800GT to Ultra and 2 Gigs or RAM doesn't get much more fps than you get, and that's in DX9. What kind of fps should you be getting according to others?

The minimum system requirements are a Athlon CPU with at least a speed of 1,4 Ghz, and 60 fps is well above "barely playable" fps.

yes i got the latest nforce drivers, didnt seem to make much difference. but do i have to delete old drivers for them to work maybe, i thought they just overrided them but i suppose if they dont that could be a problem. i always run cod2 in dx7, dx9 is not playable i.e. 25-50 fps. ive been told that in css i should be gettin 90-125 fps, and seeing as the game is a year old and my pc was pretty damn good a year ago this sounds reasonable.

For thouroughly cleaning your old drivers you could use Driver Cleaner Pro download links are at the bottom of the page.

The program is pretty straightforward to use, just select the type of cleaning filter from the dropdown box, and select "Start"

I have no other advise for you regarding drivers, you could always try tweaking your BIOS using this guide from Rojakpot.com. You can look up every possible BIOS option your MSI K7N2 Delta2 has there and the recommended settings for it, it might be a pain but I highly recommend you search this guide to find out if you currently have some settings that need to be modified that could possibly improve performance.

Good luck

ill try uninstalling all my drivers cleaning with that program and installing new ones, ive had a look at that bios guide and tried a few of the things on their, but i guess to make any real difference i have to change alot more options. thanks for all your help its much appreciated.
