problem black screen

i have a dell laptop inspiron 8600c 15"4 screen, bought in 04/01/2005, with an ATI radeon turbo 9600 graphic card, centrino 1,7 processor, 1 gb ram.
suddenly the screen turned black i thought it went to standy mode,but it wasnt ... i restarted the pc to discover that it still black, but it's not really black because if i look closely with some light i can see that the pc work normally. i tried to connect it to normal screen, the pc worked normally.
i want to add that since few time, the color was becoming a bit red, but i thought it's not a big deal and i don't know if it's related to my last problem.
The only problem also i got 2 months ago, was that the laptop was going suddenly to standby mode, i cleaned it with spray and i launched the dell diagnostic tools, the problem was solved.

i looked in the net they say it could come from motherboard or inverter or a third thing called LCD backlight...can anyone tell me from what comes my problem ? or how can i know from which of these 3 reasons it's coming ?

Sounds like the LCD backlight is dead, which means it needs a replacement! would contact dell if under warranty.
 
thanks man, but if it was under warranty i wouldn't be asking about it here i would call dell and tell them to repair it without caring about where the problem comes from :)
 
Hello. If you connected the laptop to an external monitor than you just eliminated the video card from being your problem. Now, you have 3 things to worry about; the lcd cable, lcd inverter or lcd backlight. You stated that you are receiving a faint image and that you could see the PC working normally. If this is the case, I would definitely go with replacing the LCD inverter first. In order to do this, you would need to remove the LCD panel from the laptop. Then remove the LCD bezel plastic trim (the plastic trim that has the rubber studs) underneath these studs are screws that will allow you to remove the plastic bezel. Once removed, you will have access to the LCD inverter. It is rectangular in shape aproximately 5 inches long and connected by a two pin connector cable. You should be able to see a label with the part number of some sort either on the front or the back of the inverter. Search the net for the proper inverter and replace it. This is by far the cheapest way to go before you decide to replace the LCD panel.

It is usually rare for an LCD cable to go bad, nonetheless, I would first check to make sure it is connected properly and not loose in any way in order to eliminate it from the equation. Try diconnecting the cable from the lcd and the inverter and then reconnecting it and see what happens. Sometimes when it is loose or poorly connected it could cause some issues, but based on your claim I would say it is either the inverter or LCD backlight. Usually if it's the cable, you would see the image blur and then come back to normal or if the laptop is nudged it looses picture then comes back. In this case, I would still recommend replacing the inverter. It is cheaper and much easier than replacing the back light. Now, replacing the back light will take the skills of an experienced technician that specializes in this type of repair. The replacment of an LCD backlight is very difficult and you could cause serious damage to the LCD if you are not sure how to do it properly. And in most cases it is simply more cost effective to buy a new LCD screen if the backlight is defective. In summary, check for a loose cable first. If that doesn't help, try finding a replacement inverter which usually can cost anywhere from $15 - $30. If the inverter is not the source of the problem, then simply replace the LCD or backlight. Problems with the backlight and inverter sometimes have similiar symptoms, so this is why I suggest replacing the inverter first.
 
thanks again man for your support, can you tell me how to detect the cable ? there are lots of cables where is the cable your talking about situated exactly ?
