Problems in games

I have problems in some games like NFS Shift 2, COD MW2 and Crysis. I get half second slowdowns, followed by the frames that didn't appear. This repeats while I have 3D graphics, because, in the menus, it doesn't happen. I think it's because of Directx, because this also happens in Midtown Madness, but Minecraft runs fine. I have already ruled out CPU/memory hogs, drivers, OS and viruses. Anyone has a clue about what the cause of the problem may be? (system: i7 2600k 4.4ghz, CM v8, p8p67 evo, 4x2gb 1600mhz kingston hyper-x, asus gtx480, wd black 2tb sata2, xonar xense, CM silentpower gold 800w, win7 ultimate 64-bit) (Sorry if my english is not great, I'm portuguese)

Hi,

Have you tried running dxdiag command from the run line yet? When it opens, let it runs its tests to see if it can find any errors between directx and your hardware.

Something else it might is something to do with the sound card. When I used to play Ghost Recon, I the game would freeze for half a second consistently. I found that lowering the sound quality - turning of EAX and just using software, it solved the problem because I was using onboard sound. I then bought a sound card and the game worked with no problems with the sound quality turned up. Maybe try changing your sound settings to the minimal quality to see if that helps. If it does, there may be an issue with the sound card.

Changing the sound card settings didn't solve the problem. I also thought it would be strange, considering this problem existed when I used onboard audio. The only problem Dxdiag found is that the driver of the sound card isn't digitally signed.

Its a software conflict; there is some software installed thats stealing CPU threads: you should uninstall any newly installed softwares or any recent windows upgrads in "Add/Remove Programs" in Contol Panel.

I have already checked that. During games, no program steals CPU nor memory. Besides, this also happened with my old computer, but it just corrected itself. It also doesn't happen with minecraft, for example. I have even tested reinstalling directx. I think it improved a bit, but it still has problems.

Hi,

You mentioned that this happened on your old computer as well, but seemed to correct itself. Do you have any hardware from your old computer in your new one?

Also, if you have not done so already, it may be worth it to run a memory test on your RAM for several hours to see if any errors come back. You can run Memtest86+ or I believe windows7 has one as well. Ram can cause freezing and crashes when it goes bad. You may also want to try running Prime95 to stress your processor to see if it calculates incorrectly, which is a sign of a damaged processor, which can cause freezing as well.

The only hardware piece in common is the GPU, but the problem in the other computer happened before and after I replaced the GPU.

I have been testing. It doesn't happen in Portal 2, MC, Overlord, Monster Truck Madness 2, GRAW 2, AoE 3, Colin McRae Rally, Garry's Mod, Turning Point, CSI-Hard Evidence and Quake 3; but it happens in NFS Shift 2, Midtown Madness, DiRT, DiRT 3, Crysis Warhead, Red Faction Guerrilla, STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and Metro 2033. I'll post more games as I try them.

I'm starting to guess that the problem is the GPU, because the affected games use a lot of GPU power (except for Midtown Madness, but I suspect a Software incompatibility with Windows 7). This is strange, because a gtx480 is really powerfull. What can be the problem?

I just ran Heaven 2.5 and it also happened, even in DX9 and OpenGL with the graphics in the minimum. The FPS keep the same, but the games has breaks anyway.
