problems installing a celeron chip on an MSI board

I'm trying to put together a PC, but I'm stuck getting the chip and board to work together. I've done it in the past, but this time I'm stuck!

I reduced it down to the bare minimum, so no disc, no floppy etc. Just memory, graphics card, chip and PSU. When I switch the system on the cpu and mainboard fan startup but nothing else happens. There's no "beep" from the speaker and no flicker on the monitor.

I've tried the following:
+ testing the monitor, graphics card and cable between the two. All fine
+ tried another power supply with a higher wattage, just in case.
+ sent the MD and CPU back to the shop and got new ones - same problems.

I'm clutching a straws now, two things I haven't tried yet are
- I will try it with no memory or graphics card next, just to see if I at least get a beep!
- try changing the "on" switch, maybe it's staying on

I have one nagging question, the motherboard says (Northwood only) but I can't tell if my chip is Northwood. I though Northwood was the codename for the Celeron chip but I can't find anything useful to tell me. The chip has the right pin configuration (478), right FSB(533) and the speed is supported by the MB

Can anybody help?

Northwood was the code name for the second Pentium 4 core.

Off-hand, I don't know what core the Celeron 315 is, but if it's not a Northwood core, your rig might be hanging since it can't recognize the chip. However, in my experience with this, you typically find that the BIOS will report an "unknown CPU". I'm pretty sure the CeleronD 3xx are all at least using the Prescott, if not newer cores. The Prescott require's a lot more power, and not all S478 motherboard's supported the core. I suppose you could e-mail MSI regarding this, but I *don't* think that you're going to have an easy time using that CeleronD on the MSI GNB Max-L.

Also, what power supply are you using?

Ever seen a grown man close to tears in frustration? This is my third motherboard/chip attempt.

An incorrect chip/mb combination sounds realistic as I have eliminated almost everything else.

I have tried a 300watt and a 200watt power supply. I'm not sure of the manufacture of either, but can find out if you need it.

Can anybody recommend another motherboard that will go with my chip? or more realistically what should I look for in a motherboard so as not to make the same mistake again.

I've just found another motherboard that might work: Asus P4U800-X Socket-478 ULI-M1563 ATX http://www.ebuyer.co.uk/UK/product/74704
This motherboard doesn't say (Northwood) like the last one.

The Abit IS7-E2 (make sure it's the IS7-E2, the IS7's weren't made to power the Prescott core Pentiums and Celeron's) might make a good match. As for the power supply, I'd recommend a 400W or so unit with 22A or better on the 12V rail. The Enermax EG375P-VE (370W) may not have the big wattage numbers, but believe me, the specs it has beat out a lot of crappy, so-called 500W units.
 
I think the CPU is a Prescott Core:

Northwood - P4's = 512KB Cache and Celerons = 128KB Cache
Prescott - P4's = 1024KB Cache and Celerons = 256KB Cache

I don't think many places sell Northwood Core P4's anymore so unless it states it I would assume it's a Prescott.

This has been playing on my mind for a long time. At least I know for sure now.

Now I need to grovel back to the shop to see if they'll take it back. I think i'll go for a bundle deal next time. At least the will get a compatible MB and CPU (hopefully)

Enormously off topic now but, can anybody recommend the cheapest bundle deal they know from a uk shop? I'm building a media center box, and I know the system will happily run on a 1.6 AMD. I have all the other components working in another box, but I'm on my third motherboard and chip for this one! Hopefully a recommendation from people who appear to know what they're doing, is better then the stab in the dark that I did!
