Processor Compatability???????

I just bought a P3 1GHz processor from Ebay. I current have an HP 8562 which is a P3 (500 MHz) PC. Now both the processors are the came in the following areas:
1) both are pentium 3
2) both with 100 FSB
3) both have 256 cache
I thought that, that was it but know when i have the processor i see that there is a voltage difference. The old 500 mhz is a 2.0V whereas the 1GHz one is a 1.7V.
1) Now i wanted to know that whether i should switch the processors and check them nor not.
2) Secondly what are the compatability issues one should look for when trying to upgrade a Processor.

Assuming they're both Socket 370 or Slot 1, you're looking at possibly having to go into the BIOS and adjust the voltage. It may autodetect the voltage, however. The other thing that may be necessary is a BIOS flash to support the CPU, and you'll have to check with HP for that.
 
Processor Upgrade

I am not much aware about BIOS setting and how to deal with it (also regarding Flash). I was wondering if you could provide a link to a good article or website where I could study it.
I have also mailed HP regarding my problem as well.

I think you probably can use the 1GHz chip in it, but I'm not 100% positive without knowing the exact mainboard used in the system. Some extra voltage won't nuke your CPU instantly, but long term w/o proper cooling can. I'm not sure if there are any jumpers or dipswitches you may have to adjust either.
 
1Ghz Processor

Well i have installed the new processor, but unfortunately i had to install it with the previous processor's Sink and Fan as the new one's was very big and wouldn't fit in. Well lets see what happens.
OK now that i have installed it I have two questions,
1) how do i know that it is working properly and at its full capacity because
a) directx 9.0b files show that it is an Intel P3 1GHz
b) whereas system properties show it as x86 family 6 model 8 stepping 6
(both show 256mb ram instead of 320)

2) During the installation process i also replaced one of the my 64mb ram chip with a 128mb (generic) ram chip. The new chip was not detected by windows (showing 256mb). Then i took it out and replaced it with the previous one but windows still shows 256mb of ram.
Buy the way if you think that i would need some cooling device (because the processor is really getting hot) then please do send me a link from where to buy and what is preferable.

You can download a program called WCPUID which will give you info on your cpu.

The FSB should be set at 133 and the multiplier at 7.5

As for the memory, try all the possibilities. (test all the sticks on their own and then by pair and so on) and see what happens. There may be an incompatibility between those sticks.

As for the temps, what are they ?

You can probably download a temp-monitoring program from your mobo's website.
If not, you can look in the BIOS.

Another thing you could do is add some case fans. Panaflo is good as well as Vantec but the latter is a bit pricy (I prefer Panaflo).
If you buy Panaflo fans, remember to buy the connector also because they don't come with one.
 
1 a.)If it's being detected as running at 1GHz, you're good.
b.)Sounds like you're not seating the RAM properly. Take the stick out and push it in the slot until you see the tabs click.

2.)The x86 refers the the processor architecture and the stepping and stuff is normal as well.
 
just put it in and see :D ahahaha nah kidding dont do that there will be sparks and shit every were if you do that
