PSU 650w is this up to the job ?

Can you help me please?
I am in the process of building a pc . This is my second build ( no problems with the first ) but i am having a problem with this one.

The pc would not boot up and after investigation I found the cpu fan not to be working. So I got another fan (out of an old pc) and plugged it into the cpu fan socket. this fan worked fine.

So i thought my problem was the cpu fan being faulty.
I then tried plugging the new cpu fan into another fan socket . The cpu fan worked fine in this socket. So the cpu fan can't be faulty.

So I am thinking the fan must be ok and the socket must be ok . So why won't it work when plugged into the cpu socket ?

Another problem i have is that the cd dvd combo drive lights up but the door won't open when the button is pressed. It does open if i use a paperclip in the tiny hole on the front of the drive but in immediately closes.

I am thinking that it might be my PSU that just isn't up to the job but i aren't 100% sure and would like your opinions please.
I don't really want to buy a bigger more powerful PSU and then find that this didn't cure my problems.

the PSU i have fitted isn't new its about 2-3 years old its a
Antec TruePower Trio 650W PSU - With 3x 12v Rails and 120mm Fan
 
I have got an old pc and put it side by side with the new pc. I have connected the wires from the CD/DVD drive in the old pc to the CD/DVD combo drive in the new pc and the CD/DVD drive door opened perfectly. So I can conclude that the drive is fitted and working ok.

The monitor from the New pc I connected to the old pc and that works ok. So the monitor is ok.

I have disconnected two of the case fans and removed the Ram and then retried booting the new pc. The cpu fan still doesn't start although if I flick it with a pencil it then starts and keeps going. The two case fans that came fitted in the Antec 300 have speed controllers on them . they will only start to work if set at the fast setting. Once they are going you can turn them down to medium or slow and they keep going but they will only start at the fast setting when the pc is booted.

So i am thinking its the psu that is at fault
any suggestions as to a replacement unit ?
 
I would suggest, disconnecting everything from the motherboard. Live only CPU and fun and UPS. then see if it working.
 
Hi,

I have had good luck with the thermaltake toughpower power supplies (have 2 that are still going after 4 years of use each). I also have a pc power and cooling power supply in my gaming computer which has had no problems since I got it 3 years ago. I would recommend either brand. :)

Thing is i don't think its the psu that is the problem now.
i have tried another psu in the pc. It was taken out of a working pc

Doing this did cure this fault :-

The cpu fan problem was still the same and the dvd problem was still the same.

I have read on Google that some cpu fans only turn on when the cpu gets to a certain temp.
is this true ?

How can I check if this is the case ?
won't i fry the cpu ?
if its true then it could explain the cpu fan but not the dvd problem.

First of all, are all your stuff you are using for the new build NEW ? What is the make of this Motherboard ?? you need to start from square one and first make sure that the Motherboard is Good.
then test all other stuff.

yes all the parts are NEW in the build except the PSU
and I have tried 2 different PSU's both taken out of working pc's

So the CPU fan works, just not on the new build on the Gigabyte motherboard ... Will it work if you change the CPU fan plugin to the systems fan plugin ? It sounds like the Motherboard CPU fan plugin is bad.. This happens sometimes, Heck I have seen almost everything after building over 100 pc's..

The cpu fan works if i plug it into a system fan header but not in the cpu fan header.
if i plug a system fan into the cpu fan header it works.
its not logical
i thought it was the cpu fan header - but it can't be if another fan works plugged in that header.
i thought it was the cpu fan - but it can't be because it works if its plugged in another header.
 
Yea! This is strange ? I don't thing it would make a difference on what plugin you use, just as long as your fan on the CPU is cooling the processor.. I have even run the cpu fan straight from the power supply..

I just got this cooler and was having this problem. I seem to have fixed it with a little injudicious fiddling around:
I took the fan off the cooler (the instructions for doing so are given, it's easy, and visually examined the fan. The plastic component with the actual fan blades and hub, pulled off easily. Too easily. Examining the metal spindle/axle on the inside of that plastic hub, I saw it had a notch. I pushed it back into the motor, firmly enough for that notch to click. Resists being pulled off now. Plugged the fan back in, it worked first time.
The problem here seems to be careless assembly of the final components at the factory. The fan is not being pushed properly into the motor; thus it's not engaging properly, the motor can't turn it, and things rapidly go downhill from there. luckily it's an easy fix.

So thought i would check this out :-

I have have taken out the cpu fan and removed the fan blades
nothing looked amiss. No electrical smell. Refitted the blades and
they definately clicked into place. Tried it again . Just the same.
It works in the sysfan header but not in the cpu header.

Connected the monitor keyboard etc
and booted the pc flicked the cpu fan with a pencil
it came on and stayed on.
Nothing - nothing on the monitor at all.
I don't think its even trying to post
the monitor gave me a NO SIGNAL message.

motherboard or cpu ?
How do I check these out ?
