Question for anyone familiar with the newer Nvidia gpu's

Hi,
I recently ordered a new laptop (should be here in about a week) from dell, and i have a question about the graphic card thats with it.

First of all, here's the specs for the laptop

Centrino Duo Processor 2X 1.83GHz (so.. 3.66 i guess? )
17" Ultra Screen XGA
2GB Memory
100GB 5400RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD Dual Layer Burner
NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GO! (256 megs)

got that (and a bunch of other non important stuff) for about 2400 canadian.


My main question is about the graphic card:
I know that the newer geforce models come in a variety of different kinds. like 7800 GTX, 7800 GO!, 7800 GT and 7800 GS.

Now, im pretty sure that the go! version (the mobile version for laptops) is the most watered down of the 7800 series, (compared to the GTX). but how watered down is it?
I have heard that the 7800 GO! is equivalent to a 6800 GT for desktops.

any truth behind that?

For the most part, yes.
But the only difference i can see is the Fill Rate is 3.2 Billion pixels lower which won't make an extreme difference in performance. Otherwise they are the same card essentially. Either way, your not going to get a much better gaming laptop than you've got.

hmm, when you say yes, you mean that the GO! really is equivalent to a 6800 gt?

Hmm.. booo urns. :P

on my desktop now, i have a 6600GT (126 meg) (along with a ~2ghrz processor).


Is that a big difference compared to the laptop? cause, somehow i wont feel right paying all that money for something thats not that new :P

btw. im sorry if i sound ingnorent or anything :P I just dont know that much about the technical bits of gpu's :(
 
What i meant by that is the GO 7800 is the most watered down of the bunch of 7800's but it's still a powerful chipset nonetheless.
I would say that your laptop and your desktop PC's will perform pretty much the same. The Centrino CPU's are IMHO, still the best laptop CPU's around and perform very well in most tasks. That, 2Gigs of memory and a 7800 makes a pretty good PC.

I have a bad feeling that im wasting my money. the laptop is good (great for school) but i probably shouldn't be spending 2800 (tax in) for something pretty much the same as my pc :P
 
Basically, most of the performance you're looking at comes from the clockspeeds of the different 7800 speeds.

Some adjustments had to be made for mobile use, so the 7800 needed to have some stuff like power drain factored in.
 
Hmm. that makes sense.
I kinda figured anyway, since its kinda hard to fit a card with lots of capabilities, such as the 7800gtx, into a little laptop :P

basically, im just worried that my laptop (3.66ghrz,7800 GO! 256, and 2 gigs of ram) will be TOO much similar to my desktop (2grtz,6600GT, and 1.5gigs ram)

Obviously, the laptop is better, but im just worried that its... not worth the money. lol :P

i really dont understand computer tech.. i wish i could try before i buy
 
If you need a decent laptop, you are going to shell out 1200 dollars probably anyway. The new core duo processors are the best gaming processors other than the FX (AMD hasn't even answered with their dc notebook cpus), so I would say when you buy a good notebook now, you are buying a laptop + gaming computer anyway if that makes any sense


regular laptop + gaming station = new good laptop

so if the price is less than those combined, you might as well go for it.

I guess that makes sense.
I know laptops are generally not "specifically" made for high end gaming.. well. not as much as desktops are, anyway.

I tried looking at spec's and/or benchmarks for the geforce 7800go on the internet, but i couldnt find any. (the go comes in two forms,, just the simple go, like i have, and the go GTX. i could only find benchmarks for the gtx version)

To put it short, i just wanna know if i'll have a signifficantly better gaming experience with my laptop, compared to my desktop


pc
gpu: geforce 6600 gt 128meg
cpu: athlon 2400+ (~2ghrtz)
ram : 1536mb ram


laptop
gpu: geforce 7800 GO! 256meg
cpu: centrino dual core 2x 1.83 (so.. 3.66)
ram: 2gigs


Now, obviously the laptop is better, but im just worried about the gpu :P
basically i wanna know if im getting alot of bang for my buck, compared to the pc. Maybe i should just wait until the laptop gets here :P

To make it easier, and simple.. ill just sum everything up this way.....
i just want to know the intergrity of the 7800GO compared to the others..
Like.. benchmark it! would my laptop be able to play say... doom 3 on near highest settings? (maybe not ultra)
