Radeon 9700Pro Overheating

Hey all,

I bought a Radeon 9700Pro, had it about 2weeks and it keeps overheating, when i put the side of my case on, my computer after bout 2 hours restarts, i am quite sure it is my card, as its boiling to the touch, and can smell the heat from it, ive put 2 dc fans directly over it, and its just prolongs it by another couple of hours, its driving me mad lol. any idea on what i could do?
 
arctic cooling are awesome, not to sure about their VGA coolers but people on the forum do have them so maybe they can give you an opinion
 
i already have a arctic cooling on my CPU which does a great job, but yea ill see what people say about the vga coolers
 
arctic cooling makes great vga coolers, my 9600XT idles at 33C. I hit 52C once when overclocked and AGP voltage raised .1v that's playing HL2 at highest settings except AA
 
Instead of buying a cooler, first find out why it's overheating in the first place. Unless the heat evacuation method used in that particular card is faulty (which I seriously doubt), it could be that the card is running OC'ed. Check out the Core and Memory clocks using any third party SW. There's ATI Tool for your board. If all else seems as it should be, and it's still running hot, use the warranty while you can - change it. :)
 
if you are going to get a cooler i would reccomend arctic cooling as i had one, it never managed to get onto my graphics card but i noticed that there extramly good quality and cheap for what they are.
 
My card isnt set to overclock, its just on normal settings, and brand new, strange that its overheating like this tho
 
Then I suggest that you go back to your dealer and sort things out. No company would release a product that will only cause trouble. There is something inherently wrong with your board. All those fancy coolers were meant for OC'ers -- they work extremely well in most circumstances. BUT OC'ers get value for their money by achieving better performance. In your case, your not getting that. In effect, you're paying more for the same performance.
 
he could just have inadequate airflow, with arctic cooling's vga coolers they draw air in from outside the case instead of pushing around hot air like what's going on now
 
Very good point. I'd make sure your airflow is good first. If you've got wires and cabling hanging everywhere that's a major problem. Second part is to make sure your fans are working and are sucking in at the bottom and blowing out through the back. Third part is to make sure dust bunnies aren't hiding in that case as they can cause heating issues.

If that doesn't fix it, then yes, the next step would be to get a replacement card. If it's new, and your case is clean, then it sounds like a faulty card.
