hi i have 3x 80gb hdds to spare, is it possible to put them to good use and have them work as a stripping raid array.

2x SATA 74GB (sATA)
1x PATA 80GB (IDE)*

if you know if this raid array is possible plz let me know
thanking you's

* i read that you can use a different size but it will change the MB to the smallest drive

im not sure u can do raid with sata to pata because they are using different controllers, but u still can use the 2 sata drives. i suggest using the 2 sata in raid 0 (as you said ) and your pata for backup (via drag n drop) or use raid 1 for redundancy (u lose one hard drive though) n the pata as a second drive.
using 2 not identical hard drives are not recommended for raid setup, but it is still possible.

Yes, you can. And it is correct that a RAID array is based on the smallest drive in the array. RAID 0 can be spanned across as many drives as you want. If they're on the same controller, it won't be an issue. However, if not, you can still do it, but it will need to be done in the OS, not on the RAID controller.

great cheers, well i have the 80gb PATA formatted and ready, you said it has to be done in OS (windows xp i presume (os2)) do you know what i have to do..

thanks in advance

remember THIS post? the one about the ide hdd on a raid....

well i finally found out that the entire raid array will be as fast as the slowest hard drive, and as the ide drive is considibrly slower than the raptor its rather a pointless array

Your right. The weakest link has profound effects on the array, which is why you always see it recommended that any drive in a RAID array (0,1,2,3,4,5,6, 10,50) uses the same size, type, and spindle speed.
