RAM limit for Windows 7 on old laptop

I have got a 3 yrs old laptop on which I have installed Windows 7 ultimate 64bit version. I know Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit can support upto 192gb of RAM and though the sticker on the laptop says max 3gb RAM, my question is

Can I install more than 3gb of RAM? And if I can would it be utilizing it or would it just look pretty there?

What laptop is it exactly? I believe that only limitation will be your motherboard on the laptop.
