Random sputters

Ok, so, I have been using my pal's 64x2 lappy, with an nVIDIA 8200M G GPU, running Windows 7 Ultimate. Not too bad of a system, running around 1.9Ghz per core, and all that jazz... but, that's not what the problem is.

What is, however, are these 5-30 second 'hangs'. I'll, for example, am typing this... clearly. At least once or twice, the system will 'run to catch up' with all I have typed here. Or, I'll be watching a video on YouTube, or any other kind of flash based video, and note that it locks up to. But, it goes on more then that.

I can play Second Life, World of Warcraft, Half Life, Portal, etc, etc, all of those have this 'lag' as well.

However, an interesting fact: Local videos played using VLC do NOT 'sputter'. For those that may not know, it defaults to using OpenGL, so, then, I come up with a theory.

Could there be something wrong, perhaps, with my Direct X? I just literally updated before I posted this, and restarted, only to be welcomed with these random 'hangs'... again. [Yes, before the update, I had them.] Perhaps there's some test I can run, or some application that could help me with my issue?

I also note that this system is running with shared memory as well as 256MB of Video RAM, perhaps if I removed the shared memory so the video card would be independent of the system RAM, is there a way to do this? [Note: BIOS included is crap-tastic, only offers VERY few tweaks, nothing to do with video options that I've found]

I'm running all this on a Compaq Presario CQ50-108NR
2GB on board RAM
I have AVG running, updated, and am not infected.
I have/use SpyBot S&D, no bugs found.
I looked though the list of running applications for any oddities. None found.

..so.. with all this said, I'm stumped. Anyone have any idea what in God's name is going on with the inner workings of this otherwise decent lappy?
