I've never had such a problem before, and this time I've yet to find a solution...so here goes:
Have a friend runnin xp; when tryin to load windows i get a black screen saying that ntoskrnl is missing. Naturally I try to replace the file thru the xp recovery console, but funny thing is when the console loads, it doesn't ask for a logon password so I can log onto the installation and replace the file. Since I couldn't logon, I couldn't view C: to expand the file or anything. SO, I tried adding the hard-drive to my own computer to back up the files if possible so I can just wipe the bad one and reinstall xp on it. When windows boots up it says the volume is dirty and begins scanning for bad sectors on the secondary hd. Does anyone know of a way to backup the files on this thing? Like bypassing the scan or something? And if I can recover them, is there a chance some will be corrupt or what? I've never dealt with something THIS annoying and I don't know all that much about dirty volume, etc. but I'm usually really good with things, so any explanations may help as well.

I tried but couldn't get it to browse the drive with file manager...this could be one of two reasons....1) its totally screwed, or 2) i'm linux retarded(most likely); cant remember which distro i used but i used file manager on it and the hd were listed as 0k in size

Did you mount the drive first? (right-click on the drive icon on the desktop, click 'mount')
 
Ok, this is my suggestion for anything HD related but it works 99% of the time...

Find a HD caddy (beg, borrow or steal) start up the computer and then connect the HD and (hopefully) it wont start the scan that you where talking about.

Once you done that make a image of the hard disk (you will need to find software to do this)

windoze will almost certainly moan if you try to copy and past from the "dirty" disk

Well no there were no icons on the desktop, but maybe I'll try that distro first.

A caddy? I'm assuming that's like a way to make it external/USB? Haha I've begun to hate windoze so I wouldn't expect it to let me copy them over, but what should I do once I have an image(assuming it works)? Use an image reader to get what i need? I don't quite understand what windoze means by "dirty"...like if it means system files missing or files corrupt, etc...if corrupt how will i know what files are still good?
 
Yeah, A caddy allows you to connect a device such as a HD or DVD drive through a USB port... i paid £30 for my one, i could have got it cheaper online but i needed it in a hurry (windoze had beacome un-bootable... :swear: micro$haft)

Once you have a image you should be able to read the files out of it... and if you cant for any reason then atleast you have a backup of the drive :)

I would re-try the live linux option first as it is more likely to work... Ive never tried the caddy method on the problem u've got (so anything i say about it is a mixture of knowledge, guesswork and a-sump-tions [dam my spelling!])
 
Ok guys...I tried the Linux distro and was able to read the files on the hd but the prob I'm havin now is that when I try to copy them to another hd(FAT) it won't allow it....any ideas here? Remember I'm linux-retarded
