Should I play video directly off of my external HDD?

I just put a spare 200 GB HDD into an external enclosure, and am currently using it to move over lots of audio/video media that I had taking up space on my laptop. My question, though, is this:

Is it recommended to play video directly off the external drive, or should I copy the files to my local HDD to play them? I'm assuming that it should be OK to play files directly off the external drive, but I was just wondering if the bandwidth of a FireWire/USB 2.0 connection (I have both) is reliable enough to play video directly.

It's the same as an internal HDD, just with a casing and connected via usb, so you shouldn't have any issues.
 
i m usin a USB HDD 4m 2yrs nd i ve done nearly everything on it like playing games, listening music, watchin videos.....nd i m still doingt it. I like this shit coz i can use it on any comp.
