Sky Broadband's latest offers - Dilema?

Hi all

This issue has been discussed a bit already but I am really not sure what to do...

Here are the factors:

1. Proposed - Sky Broadband Max:
Pros -
16Mbps (potential not actual)
New, better equipment - wireless modem/router
£10 per month

Cons -
"Unlimited" traffic under 'fair use' policy (Sky will not release actual figures and will judge each case of excessive use under this policy)
Min, 12 months contract.
New product and not enough time in the market for decent reviews (Sky themselves are admitting to this between the lines)

2. Current – Demon:
Pros –
8Mbps (potential again)
Very reliable connections and negligible server down times
No limits what so ever, fair or not fair.
Now paying monthly so can terminate whenever I wish to.

Cons –
Old equipment – the dreaded USB SpeedTouch 330
£20 per month
Will lose two free upgrades (I started with Demon on 512Kbps)

So… my learned friends, in your honest opinions what should I do?
Give Sky a go and see? Or stay content with Demon?

I am really tempted to go with Sky, mainly because of the reduction in price and the new equipment (no more ‘do not configure network at this time’ in the Debian installer, :P ). Ahhh, decisions, decisions….

ive just had a quick look through the broadband T+Ts there doesnt appear to be any catches, we got a letter through the post asking if we wanted to switch, but its not available untill next year

it seems very well priced, the only con i can see is like you say 'max' is subject to fair usage pollicy, im certinally gonna give it a shot!!

Sky Broadband - Broadband internet offers & broadband packages in the UK

ps, when ordering anything ALWAYS HAGGLE!! you'll be amazed, especially with sky - their staff are authorised to allow it, likewise with insurance

Not sure where to haggle.
The packages are for free apart from max which is £10.... for 16Mbps
Do you mean haggle about the limit or about the price?
A bit cheeky aren't you? ;)

Thanks for the reply.

I'd go got it, I got the invite to join, had 10 days to signup only, since theres high demand for it, I'm gona go for as it would save me around 20 month, compared to bulldog.

So you are not worried about the 'fair use ' limit?

haggle over price, companies understandably always charge over-the-odds, and beyond most of the times and would love nothing better than to get your custom

so haggle!! :D
say you were hoping to join for the first 3 months half price. you will be amazed.

I believe they assigned you to 10 days because they're obliging you to join, they always say "offer ends ??/??" but thats just to make you believe you dont have much time, so you dont mess about. They always extend the offers, if you don't join they will send you another. to turn a customer down is to lose profit  so wots with the 10 days crap?!?? think about it.. they're greedy, on every sky ad theirs always an offer. its just to get you to sign up

I made my mind up!

I am going with Sky. The temptation of £10 for new equipment, free installation and activation and monthly fee just sounds too good.

I spoke to Demon and they did not sound bothered at all about me leaving.... Maybe they have too many customers......

So anyway, that's that.... I will inform the forum on progress and results.

Thanks all for your input!
