lol, Internet!
So I was copyin all my data off of my 200gb WD IDE drive because the partition table was messed up and some partition programs were reading it as 800gb. So ok I got all my data off, ok great just gotta format it now. So as I'm formatting it I notice the IDE ribbon cable starts smoking and the plastic melting so I turn the power off immidiately and replace the cable. Boot it back up and the drive makes that beautiful clicking noise. Anyone ever heard of a smokin IDE ribbon before? Western Digital has gone down hill.

Oh and for those of you who are wondering, the power supply is not generic :)
 
Oh :swear: I've never witnessed a burning IDE cable before. But it makes me wonder whether the HDD or PSU is responsible

That famous 'Clicking noise' you refer to is a dead HDD.

I've never rated Western Digital and never will...
 
It could have been the voltage regulator on the board. Well it seems like something in the realm of possibility. It carries a lot of current and data and i'd imagine that if any serious kind of resistance came about in the cable a lor of heat would build up i guess that would be the result. IDE cables seem to just die and various times maybe instead of just not working yours just happened to catch fire
 
I'm blaming the HD on this one. I highly doubt it was the PSU as it was a quality enermax product. I've seen a lot of WD drives go sour lately..
 
really, huh thats crazy, and not cool on any level. I really like Western Digital. seriously WHATS GOING ON!!!, oh yeah sorry for your loss, i'd be going apeshit if my HDD bugged out for no reason.
 
Yup never been a fan of WD here either...I have one Maxtor from 98 till now no problems I got one WD last christmas and have had to had it replaced three times since!!
 
i'd not recommend Maxtor HDD personally (i've had a few die, but Maxtor were very good when it came to replacing a dead drive, but your data is gone for good) i now only use Seagate drives (their the most reliable IMO)
 
seriously i think you guys are crazy. I'm a huge fan of western digital from all that i've seem they make great products. Like really, new egg has a little add/link on the side of their HDD section that says in WD we trust with a link to soley western digital HDD. My friends dad has a terrabyte or so worth of western digital hard drives for his media server and has had them for awhile. one was even dropped and its still works fine. Fan or not from what i've seen they make good products
 
We all have different opinions no which HD manufacturer is the best, but in the end its all just luck. Its very unlikely that we all get the supposed "bad" Maxtors, and also that we all get the "good WDs or Seagates". Personally, WDs and Seagates have been alright.
