suspected RAM problem

I have 2 sticks of 512 patriot ram, ddr 400, and ive had no problems so far, ive had it for about 4 months. Recently i let my friend borrow it to see how it ran on his comp. Ive done this b4 and had no problems, but now my startup time for my comp has increased from about 30 seconds to about five minutes. it starts the system check the motherboard comes up and so does the processor but when 1024 memory test should come up it freezes for 4-5 min. wat could be the problem, timings or something? any ideas are welcome, thx!:D

Make sure it's seated correctly first. 5 minutes is a tad long to load up Windows!

Check your mobo manual for recommended DIMM configurations, I know my mobo doesn't like it when I place one stick in slot 1 and another in slot 3, it wants them both together or it won't utilise the RAM at all.

the ram is seated correctly and all the settings are the same as they were before the problem, but i forgot to mention that now it says i have 1048576kb of ram instead of 1024000 like it used to, im lost......:confused:
 
Put that file on floppy/cd and set the first boot device appropriately...Restart your computer and your computer will detect the file automatically!
 
in response to matt555 yes it does freeze in POST but unfortunately my bios does not have the option to configure RAM timings and voltages, do i need to update my BIOS? Another thing i put memtest on a cd and rebooted, it just paused on boot from cdrom for a split second then continued to start. anyway thx for the help so far.

It means that Memory Test didnt run......
 
You'll need to go into BIOS and change the boot order (consult your motherboard manual) so that the CD-ROM (or floppy) has first priority.
 
Is this issue still unresolved?

There's another memory test http://hcidesign.com/memtest/ which runs in windows. Nothing to do with memtest86. This has always worked for me, spotted memory errors right away with my last RAM... Doesn't require booting from a disc or anything, works in Windows perfectly.
