System wont run after cleaning heat sink and fan.

I have a desktop machine with AMD Athlon 64bit 3200+ processor and MSI RS480M2-IL motherboard

which i have been using for more than 3 years now.Yesterday evening i thought of cleaning my

heat sink and so i removed the heat sink from the motherboard. When i removed the heat sink,

the processor also got removed with it as it was stuck to the back of the heat sink. I tried

to separate the processor out of the heat sink but it wont come out. So i just cleaned the

heat sink and the fan over it. As i could not separate out the processor from the heat sink i

placed it back into the processor socket and switched on my system. The system started running

but there was no display on the monitor. So i removed the heat sink again and separated the

processor out of the heat sink with some pressure. I placed the processor first and then

locked it into the processor socket and then placed the heat sink over it. Even then there was

no display on my monitor. I don't know what i have done wrong. Someone please guide me on

this.

You need some thermal paste/compound between the sink and the processor before you go any further if it's not already too late. Clean the old off with a CPU and heatsink cleaner.

I don't know about the monitor. Does it sound and look (the hdd light showing) as if your computer is booting up? Have you tried booting with your install disc or a live Linux distro CD/DVD?

I applied the thermal paste and still it is not showing any display. The hardware guy in my office told me that the processor was not heating up. I don't know what might be the reason.

do you see the bois loading. if so the vga is working. if not the vga is not getting input probably from the cpu, cause that is the onlyitem you messed with.remove the cpu and check very closely the pins. if you do see the bios loading then the problem is probably in software and load to the safe mode in windows. also disconnect the HDMI cable if it is so connected to the vga card.

have you bent any pins on the cpu? when installing the cpu in the socket did you latch it down correctly? clean the cpu with some tissue, re apply thermal paste. secure down the heatsink, reset cmos, make sure the 4pin or 8pin cpu power connector is also in place.
