"Files are broken up into little pieces so that your computer can process them more efficiently ... when you open and close a program the pieces are saved to the first and next available space, meaning that a 1mb file could be saved over space of 100mb all in different areas ... by defraging the computer pulls all those pieces of the file and puts them in order or "in a contiguous manner' meaning that part 2 of the files is next to part 3 then part 4 etc.
By doing this your computer is able to retrieve entire files more quickly therefore improving performance"

I understand the concept but never bothered to find out...... not when using Linux....

FAT32? Is it possible that the guy is running Win98 or 95?
And also this sounds like a corporate set-up - 2 roughly same sized partitions on a "small sized disk"... (nearly said dick.... :chk:)
There are two issues here -
1. Faulty CD-ROM - Needs to be replaced
2. Performance issues - Not surprised with Win98/95.
We (HWF) need a few more details.... Laptop specs, OS etc....
The way I see it you have two options:
1. In case this is an old laptop (running win95/98) with an able CPU (PIII of 700Mhz and up or better) - Up the RAM and install XP. During installation, partition the disk as you wish. Alternatively, leave the specs and install a light Linux distro.
2. For the price of a new CD-ROM (or a DVD-ROM) and more RAM and a copy of WinXP, buy her something like this.....
My Bottom line is we need some more details to make a better informed suggestion...

I base my argument on an N300 Compaq laptop which my in-lawes have. It has a PIII 650 and 512MB. Even with performance settings set to 'Adjust for best performance' (i.e. turn off visual effects etc) it is still a bit sluggish and really is only good for light use (Internet, email and some office apps).
If only I could convince them to use Linux with XFCE it could fly!!!
