With today's extortionate cartridge prices, it would seem that the best printer to go for is the one which works well with compatible cartridges, and perhaps more importantly, accepts syringe refills without upsetting the chip. I'd be grateful to anyone out there for comments on this problem.

In my experience. For cheapest and good cartridge prices go for an epson. Any epson out recently produces good quality print outs and are not very expensive. However if you are willing to pay more for the cartridges you've got to go along the lines of the HP range. They give excellent photoquality print-outs but the cartridges are expensive and you cannot buy unofficial cartridges but you can refil them.
I say get the Canon ip4000 Printer, The picture quality is excellent considering it costs less than £100.

As an alternative, and if you're just printing black, the Samsung ML1710 or ML1750 Laser printers might be something to look at, just because they're inexpensive and toner genernally outlasts an ink cartridge. The printers themselves are also easy on the pocket book, being under the $100USD mark.

The 1710 is nice, bought that and the CL-500 for work.
Cartridges for the 1710 are about $99CDN retail here so it's a fairly cheap way to go. I'm usually able to get through a box and a half to two boxes of paper before it runs out without toner saver on so it's quite a good value.
BTW the 1710's are discontinued, the new model is the 1740.
