Hopefully in the next couple of month's I'll be using a laptop.
Probably something along the lines of:

    Core DUO 1.6GHz CPU
    1GB DDR2 RAM
    80GB HDD
Basic graphics as they're not really needed for general use, I don't really play games.

    Soon, I'll be sitting on:

    AMD 64 AM2 X2 4200+
    1 Gb DDR2 Ram
    250GB SATA2 HDD

    :D

Well I'm going to be getting my laptop in the next couple of weeks.
My Grandad gave me a cheque for £1,000 today (as a kind of 'Well done for getting into Uni - here's some money for your laptop etc'), I'm going to be spending a little over £700 on this laptop.

It's got Core DUO (1.66GHz, 2MB Cache), 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD and decent enough graphics for me.

I may call them about the 'low cost double memory offer' and see how much that is, if it's not too expensive, I'll probably get it.

It'll certainly put this pile of junk to shame, w00t!! :D

The 256MB of additional RAM I bought (768MB total) a few months back was all I needed then. But now that I use VMware a fair amount I've found that I still don't have enough! I'll probably be looking to upgrade to at least a GB, probably 1.5GB.

My processor isn't that poweful either. I am suprised that my Celly 2.8 can (just about) handle running two OSes at the same time. I might consider getting a P4 (socket 478) but my computer is an emachines so it would be like putting a turbo engine into an old Morris Minor :)

Okay - my plan to get that laptop might change - I was thinking of spending £700 (the cheque clears on Monday) but on Monday I'm going to see my other Grandparents - they want to give me some money too :D:D:D

So we shall see what happens...

You rich b******, lol, I wish I was going into uni.

Onto my plans, I've just purchased my new 19" LCD monitor, which I haven't even switched on (with a functional PC) because my Asus motherboard is being repaired (second one in 6/7 months).

So, if it fails on me again, I'll hopefully be purchasing a new DFI Lanparty mobo (yay), and maybe some more XMS ram (another 1GB).

Okay I've just ordered my new laptop - it's better than what I was going to get.

    £800 got me:

    1.66GHz Core DUO (2MB Cache)
    2GB DDR2 RAM
    120GB HDD
    128MB Dedicated ATI1400 Graphics
    15.4" Widescreen Display.
Built in: Bluetooth, Webcam and 5-in-1 Media Card Reader.

    Not bad eh?! :D:D

That's impressive, 2gig's is sweet and the gfx solution is actually pretty decent.

Yes it is dual core ^_^

    I don't follow though - check my previous posts - There's 3 where I'm considering Core DUO.

Centrino isn't a type of CPU - Centrino is a mixture of Intel parts.

For something to carry the 'Centrino' label it must have:

    Intel CPU
    Intel Based WiFi
    Intel Chipset.

That's really good but I'd say the 7900GT's better, and around the same price I believe.

Not where I live. I can't get the gs locally yet, and on ncix I can get it for $240 AR (factory oced) while the cheapest gt is just under $300 AR. Locally, the cheapest gt is $330. I also have to consider I'm being charged taxes for those MIR.

All in all I'm looking at a $30-$40 difference between the gt and gs, and the performance difference doesn't justify it. Also, those 4 disabled pipes could be unlockable, but we'll have to wait for that, although I'm not basing my possible purchase on that.

You're right dude, there is a bit more of a difference than I thought existed in price. Performance is about 15% or so different but that's not bad. Unlocking the pipes and v-shader though makes the cards basically the same deal though, that's a great bonus. I've definately changed my opinion on the card now.

I decided not to get it, for two reasons:

    1) I can't really afford it

    2) I could have had a brand new BFG 7900 GT OC 256mb for a little bit more as it was on sale at a local store @ $269.99.

Fair enough, I suppose if you plan to keep the card for some time it's best to get the fastest you can.
