Trying so hard to home network

Run the network setup wizard again on the XP machine. It will ask you to create a Network setup floppy disk which you should then run in the Windows ME computer.

I've never used the Network setup disk before, so I am not entirely sure how it works. But it's worth a try
 
yup mega thats what ive been using...ive jsut been talkint o afreind about it and they suggested installing xp on my ME pc ....what do you think?
 
Well Windows ME is a horrible Operating System in my opinion :) But that being said, I am not sure that upgrading to XP will completely solve your networking problems.

ICS (Windows built-in Internet Connection Sharing) is not very good at all. Perhaps you should look for 3rd party DHCP server / internet sharing software?
 
lol.... ur mistakin me for someone who is computer savvy ....haha .....what im saying is in your last post i dont understand what you mean about a 3rd party DHCP server / internet sharing software

With ICS, Windows is acting as a router on your network. Unfortunately, Windows sucks at networking, so ICS is no exception. What megamaced was suggesting is that you use something else for your router.

If I was in your position, I'd consider either buying a hardware router or building my own. You can build a fantastic firewall/router if you have an old, formerly useless PC laying around and a few network cards. The software's even free if you don't mind using a non-MS operating system. If that's the case, try IPCop. It'll allow you to turn a junky old PC into a powerful router powered by the Linux OS. Don't worry, it's super-simple, no Linux experience required.
 
ok... ive now updated pc 2 to xp....it has jsut enough ram to do it......stilll it doesnt work ...but ive just found out the person who installed xp asked it to save any settings ont he ME ...which is not really what i wanted...is it possible that if i configured ti wronly on ME that its taken the wrong settings....or would teh system recognise it was wrong??

mega ...do u htink u might be able to configure it locally with xp on both pcs?
 
I could connect to both computers and configure them via remote assistance. But at the moment my internet connection is running very slow, as I share it with about 12 rooms in my house!

But as Anti-Trend was suggesting, it might be easier for you to buy a cheap router (about £35) and connect both computers to it. They will be able to share files and browse the internet at the same time
