Ubuntu 5.10 Question

Hi all...
I recently decided to try yet another Linux and this time it's Ubuntu 5.10.
Now, don't get me wrong, i am liking it a fair bit but what i don't like is the Gnome desktop and how the Mac OS style menu bar is so small and that Ubuntu doesn't seem to really have as many control options as most KDE Linux's have (like control center), they seem to be scattered everywhere.
In particular, i can only change the Video card's resolution and refresh rate and nothing else i.e - Dual Monitors.

So basically, i want KDE and NOT Gnome and if it's possible, i want a control center where everything is in one place instead of finding settings in 25 menus.
It's just a little confusing :(

If any of this is at all possible, then please let me know!

Hi Pelvis.

I did the same thing and started from Ubuntu 5.10.
I am ahsamed to say that after running it for a few week, I cannot remember a thing about it....

I liked it though.... not as much as Mandriva but I still liked it.
It was, however, a bit more work than Mandriva.
I really do prefer the KDE. I think it is much cooler.

Why don't you give Mandriva a go? You can get the 2005 for free.....
If you want you can always try the 'do I really like this?' live CD.....

Also, with Mandriva, you have AT and his all consuming knowledge! :D

Well, basically the Half-Assed version is i couldn't be bothered downloading the 2.039GB DVD on oh-so old dialup. It took me 3 days of continuous downloading to get Ubuntu. So when i get two weeks of free time, that's when i'll download Mandriva, but i would like to give it a go, and thanks for the suggestion :)

You can get Ubuntu with a KDE interface, called Kubuntu hehe.
Yeah, i realsied that after i got Ubuntu downloaded, same thing, couldn't be bothered to download another linux as yet!

Sorry, I was away visiting my parents for the holiday. Yes, the KDE version of Ubuntu is called Kubuntu. If you don't want to totally reinstall you can simply enable all of the software sources and install the KDE packages with synaptic.

Hi AT
Don't suppose you could tell me where to find synaptic please?
And where would i find the KDE packages?
I'm just not used to the Mac style taskbar, it looks soooo bare :)
I'm such a n00b at Linux :(

Synaptic is the package manager in Ubuntu/Kubuntu. It might also be called by something like 'Manage Software' or something similar. Sorry, I am not currently running Ubuntu on any of my systems so I can't give first hand advice. But the gist of it is that you need to enable Ubuntu's so-called "Universe" and "Multiverse" repositories and choose to install KDE from Synaptic. From the Ubuntu Wiki:

Why does Ubuntu install Gnome by default? Do you support KDE and KDE applications?

The default desktop environment on Ubuntu is Gnome. However, Ubuntu recently launched another project, Kubuntu which uses the same base as Ubuntu plus KDE. The Kubuntu release was made simultaniously with the latest Ubuntu release. Kubuntu is not a fork or a separate distribution, the packages for both releases are in the same archives.

To install Kubuntu from an already-running Ubuntu distribution you can either select to install the kubuntu-desktop package from Synaptic, or run sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop from the command line. For more information on Kubuntu and KDE applications you can see the Kubuntu wiki entry.

Alrighty then, sorry i took almost a month to reply, been pretty busy and just forgot to test it.

I opened Synaptic as root and tried finding KDE in there but to no avail, so i then ran the sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop command and it spat out this error message:
Reading Package lists...done
Building dependency tree...done
E:Couldn't find kubuntu-desktop

What could this mean exactly?

You need to enable all of your repositories in Synaptic, as only a couple are enabled by default. Enabling all of the repositories will give you access you many more programs including KDE.
