This is far out!

Read the comments too, some people claim it works, but my guess is they're too close to the car.

Edit: tried this with my bosses car, it didnt work!

personally, i wouldn't have thought it would work, cos, as you say

the phone can only detect audio ranges between 20 - 20,000hz, the fob transmits a way lot more than that (possibly in the MHz) at 20 - 50Db
Edit: but it would be funny / good if it did work

Those are services for GM and Ford, respectively, that come packaged with certain vehicles. One of the features include the ability to have an operator remotely unlock your car should you accidentally lock your keys in.

Now, I suppose it is possible to unlock your car with a cellphone, but that would require you to know the frequency and have a phone that would allow for that sort of program to be run. My guess would be something like a Motorola Q or a Blackberry, but that's just a guess.

but dont cell phones operate on microwaves, not radio (or ultrasonic) frequencies (which is what is required). to pulse the required wavelength the mobile would HAVE to have the correct hardware that the car can detect

I'm no expert, but yeah, it looks like microwaves are what cell signals are sent over. Like I said, it's possible, but that just depends on the equipment at the time. It's into territory I'm not particularly familiar with.
