"Upgrade" to win2000?

I'm pretty discouraged at how sluggish XP can be at times and although I have an XP disk lying around I can't help but think that going to 2000Pro would be a better plan. It's almost the same thing anyway except it doesn't look as nice but is less bloated. All the crappy computers at school run it fine and they have pathetically bad specs. The only thing aside from the extra money issue is would there be any DX9 problems or incompatability issues? I'd buy vista a little after it comes out most likely so what I'd get now wouldn't matter as much. Still I'd like some opinions. Thanks:)
 
I think it'd be wise to do so. The only compatibility issues i could see arise is from software that'll only run on XP such as WMP10 and so on...
 
Thanks man. Would there be any degredation in gaming performance? I'm just thinking about the whole DX9 deal with XP that 2000 doesn't have integrated.

You've got to be kidding. They are both NT5. I don't see how you could have compatability issues... even the drivers are compatible with both (e.g. 2000/XP). 2000 is better for gaming, not worse. Why do you think Xbox runs 2000 even when XP was ready at the time?
 
I've read about and used both os's quite a bit and I agree with you that that they are both the same, XP just looks a bit prettier. So what makes you think that 2000 would perform any better on your PC? If you're after playing games you need a FAST PC and if it runs XP slow then it'll run 2000 slow too. I'd try stripping all the programs off first and doing a reconfigure. Keep the HD clean with not too much stuff on it and make sure you're spec is the best you can afford. I've seen a few decent PC's let down by cheap PSU's and other non sexy parts that you don't think about as much as the graphics card. What spec are you running?
 
I just thought that XP had more support for DX 9 like I've said. I know very little about this but it's just an assumtion, it's new I'd thought it must be better for demanding activities like gaming. But since it doesn't seem to matter that's great. My specs with my current computer are fine. Athlon 3000+ 64, 1GB ram, 80gig hard drive, GeForce 6800. It runs XP fine but it just seems too bloated and full of extra useless stuff. I can always just download a skin for 2000 if the syle bothers me. I assume 2000 will be a little more responsive as it uses less ram as there's no so many processes going.

Nope, Windows 2000 is fundamentally the same, and it supports the same versions of DirectX that XP does. Any incompatibilities between XP and 2000 would be purely artificial, as in the case of WMP10. It's just a tactic by Microsoft to corral users into upgrading, the same they did with WMP8 when XP first came out.
 
Nice, thanks man, now if only 2000Pro was cheaper, can't find it any lower than $88:( Ebay perhaps. I'm a little ripped now as I just got Service Pack 2 in the mail free from MS and because my copy of XP is a schools copy MS doesn't like the product key I've got. All the more reason to "upgrade" the OS whenever I get a new PC.
With so much similarity how could MS wait a couple years only to rerelease their OS with a bit more bloat and a nicer color scheme?
 
I think win2k would be better for gaming because it requires less RAM then a default install of WinXP. As for your key problem, or there lack-of, just call Microsoft, repeat the sequence of numbers it tells you at the activation wizard, and just tell the rep that you're just doing a re-install, on one pc, and she'll give you another sequence of numbers to enter, and voila, you're activated.
 
I wouldn't trust anyone on eBay to sell a genuine version of Windows. They could have an original disc paired with a pirate CD-Key or anything. I don't think it's worth the risk of wasting your money!
Local computer store you can trust maybe?
 
Unfortunatly I have no such store, in fact I don't know of any actual PC computer store in the state. I'm sure they exist but heck if I know where:( Would be awsome if there was one a few miles away.
