alright, i have convinced myself that i have done the dumbest thing i have ever done in my entire life and that there probably isn't any way possible to fix it but heres what happened. I just built a brand new system. apparently without knowing it, i hooked up the usb incorrectly. i plugged in my usb flash drive and the light went on, then it went out. i was waiting for it to come back on -it didn't. i took another look at the diagram and i had reversed the polarity on the usb port! i frantically tried to revive the san disk on another computer but to no avail. :( and of course, i DIDNT back up the thumb drive. So, any suggestions? other than to trash the drive and my wrecked data? thanks in adavance!

I'm not sure that your flash drive is dead or not, because of the improper alignment. At the initial plunging the USB use around 10V, and it is enough to burn the device. Better to try on another PC also.

By the way only data recovery tool I know is on smartpctools.com, you can use a trial.

thanks for the quick response. i'll give that a try, but the thumb drive doesnt even light up any more. i think im SOL

Yeah I thought you might say that. haha. Uh well, just a couple semesters of work on it. lol. Well figuring it was dead, yesterday I tore the thing apart to look at the inside to check if there were any signs of melting or whatever. Inside the gel coat surrounding the motherboard there was a acid-like liquid. The liquid was the type that if you held it up to a light it would look like rainbow. That confirms that its dead. lol. thanks for the help.
