Using Two Modems For Dial-up?

I have heard that two modems can be used at the same time for faster dial-up and I am curious to know more, if there is anything to know. I have a V.92 Creative Modem Blaster and get decent speeds now. Right now it is 44.0 bps and usually it is around 49.0. With the ISP's accelerator I have pretty fast service for dial-up until I try to download a large file, you know what that does to the speed. Cable and DSL service are available, I tried Cable, but it is $$$. Maybe the $$$ will get better, but if there was a benifit to two modems, they are pretty cheap. Now I have upgraded from a K6-2 550 to an AMD X2 939 4800 and a EPox EP9NPA nForce 4 m/B so my system should be up to a few additions. I plan on additing a few items and I do have a 550 watt PS and 2 gigs of RAM. Any thoughts on the modems.
 
in theory, you could achive double the download speed however i think you would need a second phone line, so your dialup call charges would also double, i dont actually know how to do it, but the theory is sound, in practice i just don't know
 
Cable or DSL can't be that much more per month then dial-up. By the time you buy a new modem and more monthly charges for a second line it's just more practical to get DSL or Cable.
 
I ways always interested in trying this.
I think its called bridging the modems. Thats all I know!
 
I Know its possible, i used to have the code which made it possible (i never used it, put i belive it installed itself as a new connection and just multiplexed between the 2 modems)
 
Where do you live? Here in the US, 768kbps DSL can be had for about $20/mo on most ISP's.
 
Thanks everyone, They were good answers. The extra phone line is something I had forgot about (CRS) and it would make sense to need two lines. I live in Pennsylvania and this area was covered by Adelphia cable which I have tried and it worked well. Adelphia was taken over by Comcast and I don't know what their cost is going to be yet, Comcast is suppose to have very fast service, but their website showed $57.95 a month. I don't know if that is final because I know they are still working out the details.

Comcast just sent me the second bill for our TV service. Maybe a "package" will materialize?? $57.95 is $695 a year and I don't want to feel that I need to be online all the time to get my money's worth. I don't care for that much sitting at my age, which is in the grandfather range (67) compared to most of you. I appreciate the replies and it is nothing I need to do this very minute. (I might try DSL, it is available here too.)
