Wanna Make My Old Computer a little fast?

Hello Guys,

Guys this is my old computer which I got and it’s very slow. I would like to know which parts in this old computer I should upgrade it to make it faster. First is my new dxdiag information as on 27/11/2009 of this old system in which XP is installed now and below that I have attached my old dxdiag information when I had windows 98 on this Old system

Now my questions are as follows:
1. Which parts of this system can be upgraded and which should be kept?
2. If hard disc can be upgraded then which hard disc maximum can my motherboard and processor support say 50gb, 80 gb, 100 gb, 200gb or more then 500 gb bcoz the current hard disc that I have is just 20gb?
3. Do I need to upgrade my powersupply of this old system as at the back of my CPU its just written 230V? If yes then which how much watts powersupply should I buy?
4. When I had windows 98 sound used to come, now the sound does not come after installing windows XP and I do not have the main disc also which came with windows 98 and this was bought long time back I don know many years have passed out. Now I wanna ask do I need to buy a sound card for this or can I update the sound card drivers if internal sound is present?
5. The processor present is enough or does it need a bigger amount of processor?

Guys I am sorry if I have asked too much but you know people say “Old is Gold” and I do not want to throw this system away as my grandpa used to use it and he expired long time back. So you can say it’s his 1 thing which I have as memory and I want to make this run faster. So what are the things which should be upgraded in this system please let me know asap.

That CPU architecture is around 5 generations old. To be honest, spending money refurbishing that would be a complete waste of time and money. If I was you, I'd build a new PC from scratch and use your old machine for something lighter. For instance, put a lightweight Linux distro on it for free and use it for an internet terminal.
 
My friend says that my processor is good. Only if I put 40 gb or 80 g hard disc then it wwould run a little bit faster bcoz I only have total 20 gb hard disc in my old system which has an windows xp OS
 
No offense intended, but your friend is wrong. A K6-III is 11 years old, has a narrow bus, and is roughly equivalent in performance to a first generation Pentium 3. There's a reason AMD quickly retired the K6 family in favor of the Athlon, which is far superior to the K6 family and yet is painfully obsolete itself. Replace the HDD if you like, but it will do little good in terms of performance -- especially if you are running an antivirus.

...So which is it? If it's not slow, why do you want to make it faster?

You asked for advice and I'm giving it to you. Spending money to upgrade a K6-III system with SDRAM and an SiS chipset is an exercise in futility. Do so if you want, but I will not recommend it. It just doesn't make any sense to "upgrade" a 10 year old system when you can build or buy a new one that will literally be 20 times faster for a relatively small investment. So take it or leave it, but that's my advice for you.

The new system is certainly lightyears ahead of the old one, that's for certain (though it could probably do with a few more gigs of RAM :)).

Honestly, if I was you I'd just try repurposing the older system into something less demanding on its resources. I already gave one example, a light Linux internet terminal, but there are other things as well. For instance, a secure home server running SME Server, a firewall appliance running IPCop, m0n0wall, pfSense, etc. With the latter two, you could even replace the HDD with a small flash drive and run them as embedded OSes. You'd only need a few cheap NICs to do the job.

But again, if you are planning to make your K6-III rig faster, the best thing you can do for it is replace the OS. Upgrading the hardware really shouldn't be taken into any serious consideration. Even if you did throw money at it, how long would it be until the old electrolytic capacitors on the motherboard and other components began to fail? How many parts would you replace to keep the old thing running? Obsolete parts cost as much or more than equivalent current generation parts that perform many times better, so you'd end up spending top dollar on decade old hardware. For $200/USD, you could buy a small form-factor system that's many times faster, quieter, more power efficient and more capable than your K6-III system. Just look at Intel ATOM-based mini-itx systems and you'll see what I mean.

That's around ~$1,075/USD, with which you could build a respectable system from scratch. If you want to put some cash into your existing rig, doubling the RAM would be a safe investment. If you want to upgrade other components, I'd want to know what you primarily use the machine for before I could make good suggestions. "Fast" in gaming, fast for compiling, fast for rendering, etc.
 
I want to watch movies, play high end games, listen to songs and wanna know if I could connect my new system to my home theatre if that is possible. I wanna know how to connect. Also I wanna know if I could connect my new system to my tv at home to watch movies by playing the movie from my computer and the display should come on TV if that is possible. I have got Aiwa tv A1419 which is 14 inches only. Its there from past 15 years. Is that also possible let me know.
 
Well, if you're gaming I'd definitely double the RAM and add a dedicated video card. If you get a middle-upper end card with an HDMI out, you should be able to pipe digital audio and video to a recent entertainment center without much hassle.
