Hi, this will be my first post on this forum... pretty nice one if i may say so, certainly won't be the last (although my hardware knowledge is limited, but if anyone needs help with Linux, just shout :cool: )
Here's my problem; I was rebuilding the file system tree on my WD for like the 30th time in a row or something (never format your hard drive to ReiserFS, you'll regret it... bug-filled tools and all) when I accidentally rested my elbow on the hard drive. It made an awful squeak and came to a sudden halt in the rebuild progress. I tried unplugging it and inserting it again, but it made this strange noise which can only be described as something similar to that of the "next in line please"-sound of the Swedish pharmacies.
I have now (after a bit of tears, sweat and actual blood as I accidentally stung my finger on the screwdriver) managed to take it apart, and as I suspected, the reader needle had jammed the magnet disc. The needle is now back in place and everything looks just fine and runs as it should when I manually move the parts.
The problem is when I insert it in the computer USB port (usb powered only...). The disc spins twice, very shortly and then halts and nothing else happens (no, I have not put the casing back together because I suspected things wouldn't go as easy as reseting the needle.
The (separable) feeder circuits with the processor and everything is just fine. I ran some linux commands to check it (lsusb, lshw, dmesg... as super user of course) and it responds correctly with full name and specs of the disk and even the blue led on it lights up as it should.
I have even tried the needle and it too respond correctly by resetting to starting point before the two spins, but after that, everything is dead.
Anyone have any ideas what might be wrong?
