What Happens When a Hard Drive Fails in RAID

Hello,

I'm looking to find out what will happen if there is a hard drive failure in a RAID 1 setup using a GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard by Gigabyte. What I mean by this question is will the computer just stop working until I replace the failed disk, will it beep and screech to alert me but continue running, or what else will be the tell-tale symptom? Also, if and when a hard drive should fail, are there any steps beyond just replacing the disk that I should know about when doing a repair?

A Hard drive can fail at ANY point, Sometime you might hear a noise, but most of the time they will just stop working..
There is software out there for Fixing the hard drive, almost all major brands Make there own. I use Hard Drive Regenerator or Spinrite to repair mine.
 
Will the computer continue to function properly if one HDD goes down in the RAID 1 set up, in that case? Or will the computer just completely shut down until I install a new, functioning HDD?
 
Well, That depends on where your OS is install at , If your OS is on the bad Hard drive, Then Yes it Will NOT run right or at all.. The bad part is that when you replace your hard drive with your OS on it, You will lose everything, Unless you backed it up..
 
Ok, Tell me about your computer !!!! Make and Model !! Sounds like you have 2 sata hard drives... Is this right ? Your OS will ONLY be on One Drive.
 
It's a custom build using the GA-Z77X-UD3H motherboard by Gigabyte. It will have two HDDs, yes. I'm not sure what size they'll be, but they should end up being the same size as one another in terms of space.
 
Gigabyte is a good motherboard, That is mainly what I use when I build any new computer.. Did you clone the second hard drive to match the first one ?How do you know the second drive is mirrored ?Usually the second drive is a recovery drive, or for storage..
 
I haven't mirrored them, yet, or even finished the build. I'm only asking for future reference. But when I do install the HDD's, I'll be using RAID 1, provided by the motherboard's RAID settings. RAID 1 should mirror the two hard drives so that they both are exact copies of one another at all times, if I understand what RAID 1 is correctly.
 
Yes, That is the y way to do it... What are you going to be using the Raid setup for ? Gaming or Video editing ?
