Hi all,

What is the best way to transfer the data between two computers depends on the following factors.

  1. Data transfer rate
  2. Expenditure on such technology
  3. Ease of use

I’ve made a poll option, and make your comments there.

Here’s what I thought on this case.

USB 2.0 supports data rates as high as 480Mbps, even in normal condition it can be around 50Mbps. So, to transfer 1GB of data it takes around 20 - 30 seconds. Easy to use, because the hot plug is supported. But it is expensive.

To use NIC (Network Interface Card), first need to install drivers or software, because some of the main boards don’t integrated NIC circuitry there. Data transfer rate of crossover cable is varied from 100Mbps to 10Mbps. So it takes more than 30 seconds to transfer 1GB of data. Especially the length of the cable determines that. Cheaper than USB 2.0.

At the end, two factors are satisfied (data transfer rate and ease of use) by USB 2.0, and seems to me it is fine.
 
Many ethernet devices and switches now support gigabit transfer rates, so over a local network it can be very fast.
 
Just like Addis, I should say an NIC, because of the faster transfer speed and the longer maximum length of the cables.
 
For network transfers you need nothing in most of the cases, since almost every PCs is already in a network, either wired or wireless.
For USB you need to move the PCs physically. In the worst case, you can make a crossover ethernet cable as long as you want in 5 minutes...not the same with USB

In all actuality it depends on how far you are xfering between the computers. There was a study done that found the exact amount of data that would need to be transferd where it would be quicker to store the info over DVD-Rs and drive it than to WAN share it. This was of course over a spread of miles, but still I found it quite interesting that driving hard copies can still be faster than a data xfer.
 
While USB can be used, I've seen very little of it. MSI had some program they bundled with their motherboards for awhile, but I don't recall how well it worked. It's an all-purpose hot-plug standard, but it's not a master in certain areas. Networking with NICs has been there for a long time, and is well rooted in this function. Not only does gigabit transfer outperform USB, you also have longer runs. 100m versus 12 feet, if you compare CAT5 to a USB cable. Fiber optic cabling is another story altogether.

yeah, NIC every time

as NICs are inexpensive, and even thought personally i hate M$, but XP does make things very easy

a standard 10/100 NIC is very cheap
10/100/1000 = gigabit, are a bit more expensive

BTW:i think 10/100/1000 NICs are about 4 or 5 times more expensive than standard 10/100 NICs
 
Actually after all these comments and the articles, etc... NIC is better. USB is little expensive than NICs, but the data transfer rate is not much differ. But use of NIC is not easy, comparing to USB.
