Whole bunch of Kubuntu questions

I've recently installed Kububtu on my pc. But I'm having a whole list of questions. Here they come:

- I can't log on to my root account: If I enter su root, and enter the password, it says Authentication Failure. Sorry. If I want to log on to root from the logon screen, it says logon failed.

- I have an ATI Radeon X700 Pro, so I've downloaded the drivers (the automated installed (.run) file. How do I open the .run file?

- The audio makes a buzzing noise if I but the volume high in Kububtu.

- Where can I find a pre-compiled version of ndiswrapper for Kubuntu. (I don't have an internet connection on Kubuntu yet).

- Kubuntu can't open rpm packages, because it doesn't know what program it needs to use to open them (neither do I )
 
First off, please look at the sticky Ubuntu thread here. That will answer most of your questions.

I will answer #1. You cannot and should not login to KDE or any other desktop as root.....EVER. That is what su and sudo are for. SU is disabled in ubuntu by default but there is a thread here about altering that, just search for it. Ubuntu uses 'sudo' for its user switching. Just remember that sudo uses your USER password and not the ROOT password.

I'm not so sure about the audio buzz, probably a hardware issue or the gain is turned too high and that is causing the buzz. Generally you never want to turn the input volume (that from audio players as well as hardware CD player) up to 100%. Keep the input volume around 87%-92% and you can turn the OUTPUT volume up to 100%.
 
RPM's are for rpm based distributions. You can use a tool called "alien" to convert rpms to debs with reasonable success rate.

You'll find it a lot easier to just hook up the PC to the network with an ethernet cable, update the system and download any packages you need.

For your audio problem, run "kmix" and open the mixer. Make sure your PCM volume is at about 75%, no more. Use the master volume to change the volume from now on.
