Will Win98 run on my computer?

Hello. I just built a computer using a intel pent. 4 processor, and a SATA hard drive. I have a windows 98 install cd, that I am planning on using, but I am wondering if it will work with the sata and the pent4? I know i should just use XP, but my main computer is a Mac, and I don't feel like investing in XP, when I only use it for programs that wont run on my mac. If Win98 wont work, will win2000?

I'm not sure 98 supports SATA drives. In XP installation you need to supply the drivers floppy disk anyway, so 98 won't support it. You CPU is fine for compatibility though.

Windows 2000 will install, but you'll still need to supply the driver disk during install.

Maybe someone else can clarify.

I have checked and you can install SATA drivers for win98.
However, I could no find proper, good how-to install windows 98 on a SATA drive....

And more than likely you won't. I highly doubt that you will see any of the newer technology be supported in Windows 98. These OS's aren't made with the stuff we have now in mind.

If you already have Windows 2000 laying around, I'd go with that. It's NT5 just like XP, so it will be able to run the same software, use more or less the same drivers, etc. as WinXP. It's also fairly fast and solid (moreso on both counts than XP), so it'd be the best choice for a Win32 OS for you. Like any Windows OS, just make sure you supplement it with a firewall such as Sygate Personal (if it will be exposed directly to the Internet), an anti-virus such as AVG Free, and anti-spyware tools like AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, and Spyware Blaster.
