Windows Live Messenger won't install in Vista

I just installed Vista to try it out, and on a new installation, one of the first programs I tried to download and install was Windows Live Messenger (The new name/version of MSN Messenger).

During the installation process, I got the error message:

"An error occured during the installation of assembly 'Microsoft.VC80.CRT, processorarchitecture="x86", type="win32", publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b", version="8.0.50727.91"."

.. and the installation aborts.

Since this is a brand new installation of Vista - not messed up by anything else so far - I am at a loss to explain why this would be happening.

The version of Vista I'm using is the 64-bit Ultimate edition.

Does anyone know what's wrong?
