Wireless router issue

Hi guys!

I have a TP-Link TD-W8960N router.

I am currently struggling to get onto the setup page of the router. (the http://192.168.1.1 page)

If I plug in my router the power light goes on and nothing else. If I plug in my pc through a ethernet cable to one of the ports, the specific port's light goes on as well.

My pc gets assigned a strange 169 ip address.

I obviously can't access the internet and I can't pick up the wireless signal of my router.

If I hold in the hard reset button for 30 seconds it won't reset. I have held it in for 30 seconds and I have used the 30/30/30 hard reset method as well and it didn't work either.

Is my router broken beyond repair?

don't bin it, there's a few things to try

as you've tried a 30/30/30 reset try a 60/60/60 (a 60 reset is a full reset including a purge of NVRAM) reset after that verify the date & time is correctly set (obviously don't forget to power cycle the router after the reset)

failing that move the router (residential gateway) as far away from anything that may be interfering with it as possible (e.g. refrigerator, cordless / mobile phones) then after all possible interference or possibly at a neighbors then do another 60 reset

and maybe there's a firmware update available, that's all off the top of my head, if your still having probs i'll do some research

if anything is interfering with it then chances are something is creating "dirty" power nearby the power point your using

Sounds like DHCP server has a problem, try giving your LAN NIC a static IP on the same IP range and Subnet as the router e.g. 192.168.1.2, 255.255.255.0, (gateway doesnt matter). then just try pinging the gateway to see if you get a response, you could also try Telnet to see if it connects on port 80.

BTW: TPLink is cheap and nasty, if your looking for quality and performace Draytek, Billion are they way to go.

Good Luck.

interesting!, if DHCP was misbehaving, assigning a static IP wouldn't fix it as OP can't access router IP and presumably Telnet would also fail to connect to IP

or if i'm incorrect, plz correct me

BTW: as OP said router won't reset, so OP has tried standard reset & 30 reset which is why i suggested a 60 reset

How can he access the router when he states his pc doesn't get a IP Address?

Hi, For the configuration settings of the wireless router support device

1. Restart the computer
2. Open the web browser and type http://192.168.1.1 at the address bar.
3. The router configuration screen will appear and enter a username & password.
4. Click on Internet Setup and select a connection type.
5. Enter a wireless security option and the password.
6. Click OK.
7. Check the internet connection.

Done

Thanks
