    The Official HWF Kernel Repo

I'm actually building 64-bit kernels for a different project, specifically, patched with GRSec/PAX and hardware-optimized. But I've been thinking seriously about building x86_64 desktop kernels also, since it makes a lot of sense. 64-bit is much more desirable on a desktop presently than it was...

lookign at remote pc software for an old lady with moderate intuition about puters

lookign at remote pc software for an old lady with moderate intuition about puter TightVNC has a java-based web client that works pretty well and is totally OS/browser agnostic (just needs Java). However, she'd better have a good password, or that box will be a spam relay in no time flat. Also...

Terrible Pings and IPV6 vs IPV4

If you're using IPv6, it's probably the worst thing you can do for games right now. Most Internet infrastructure is running IPv4, which means IPv6 must be encapsulated in IPv4 in order to work. Really inefficient. I would disable any IPv6 and use IPv4 only until a majority of service providers...

Anti-Trend where do you work / what do you do ?

Technically just once a day. I always make sure there's enough food that I don't have to take breaks from eating. No, but they climbed me once thinking I was an Aztec pyramid.

I live in the United States of Awesome, and I wear size 80 pants (aka XXXXX-Elephant Large), as is customary for those in the IT field.

Wanna Make My Old Computer a little fast?

Well, if you're gaming I'd definitely double the RAM and add a dedicated video card. If you get a middle-upper end card with an HDMI out, you should be able to pipe digital audio and video to a recent entertainment center without much hassle.

Wanna Make My Old Computer a little fast?

That's around ~$1,075/USD, with which you could build a respectable system from scratch. If you want to put some cash into your existing rig, doubling the RAM would be a safe investment. If you want to upgrade other components, I'd want to know what you primarily use the machine for before I...

    Can anyone solve this?

I would like to see the output of 'ipconfig/all' from both machines; the working and the non-working.

Getting ready to build new computer for first time, need advice

I'm a Linux guy who swore off Microsoft products years ago, so not much help there I'm afraid. But I can tell you that Windows 7 is essentially Vista 2nd edition. I understand it fixes some of the more annoying problems in Vista. Some, but not all. Building a system is easy as long as you take...

Getting ready to build new computer for first time, need advice

Sounds good. Yeah, you can use it for just one card. The difference is that it has the connectors and power for 2 cards should you need it. I think you'll be much happier with that one in every way. Sounds good. Not a problem.

Getting ready to build new computer for first time, need advice

Looks pretty good, though I will make a few suggestions for you. Get a slightly better power supply, 600 watt or better. 500 will be hard pressed to keep up with system load, and therefore won't last as long as it could. 900 pixels just doesn't seem like enough real estate for a lot of apps...

    Monitor issues

If you're using the 15DBA analog VGA connector, try switching to the all-digital DVI connector instead. There is no auto-adjustment necessary with DVI, since the signal source is very predictable. If the issue still occurs with the DVI cable, the monitor's internal power regulation could be...

Wanna Make My Old Computer a little fast?

The new system is certainly lightyears ahead of the old one, that's for certain (though it could probably do with a few more gigs of RAM :)). Honestly, if I was you I'd just try repurposing the older system into something less demanding on its resources. I already gave one example, a light...
