The other thing that does make a difference is that the general bent of Linux is free and outside of your Novell and RedHats, aren't for-profit. Microsoft and Apple are, which is a different model. Additionally, they have shareholders, who have given these companies money with the expectation of getting a return on that investment.

As for MS having to reimburse former users for past OS purchases, that's just silly. Doing so could bankrupt a company. I know that's what some of you would love to see happen, but what if Ford had to reimburse people who purchased a Honda and got rid of their Taurus?
Companies won't operate in an area if it's not profitable, and trying to pummel them with fines does not encourage business. Additionally, if they do pay it, they'll find a way to pass it along. Every company, large or small does this. It sucks, but to please shareholders, keep a cash flow, and in some cases, just pay the bills to stay in business, it has to be done.
It also seems like the EU has been targeting American-based companies, but Microsoft and Apple happen to be some of the bigger targets.

And that's completely right. America is holding off people who want to live there from getting a job. So that's 1-1 for America vs. EU.

And about making money for shareholders, there's nothing wrong with that. But when they start 'robbing' people by misleading them (The Vista Ultimate extra's that have never been released and are removed in SP1) are things that they shouldn't do. Why don't they make their money by advertising, like google does?

We also have to (well, supposed to) check out people, especially in light of 9/11. Ideally, we don't want somebody who's going to go on welfare, or is a "typhoid Mary". We have legal processes to go through to get here. Don't tell me countries in Europe don't have immigration processes (which include any foreigner coming over, for citizenship or not).

No unfortunately not. That's why almost every country here is low on money.
