Overheating??

Ok, I'm having some *ahem* LOTS *ahem* problems with my computer randomly rebooting itself (Although I have now set it to show BSOD first)..

This typically happens when:

-Playing games
-Copying a DVD
-Watching a movie

I have looked at the error messages in the event manager, and the messages on the BSOD - however, each message is different, sometimes quite significantly different.

Im not a total tech newbie, but not entirely experienced either - and I have a niggling suspicision that it could be overheating...

Fairly old system now : specs are as follows -

Athlon XP 2400 2.0GHz
512MB SDRAM
GeForce 4 4800SE (Think thats the model anyway - using laptop not pc)

It was suggested on another forum that I reinstall video and chipset drivers, however this made no difference.

Can anyone confirm that it is overheating, or suggest alternatives as to what it could be?

Ta!!

reinstalling drivers wouldn't help, these are strong cpu/gpu tasks, i believe that one of your parts may be overheating yes, before you boot in, check your temps through your bios, should have hardware monitoring, and tell me what boot up temps you have.

i believe its a possible cpu overheat.

Well, 50 isn't going to make you crash. If it is overheating you're probably running like 70*. If so try dusting with some compressed air. Should be fun at least.

Hi guys.. cheers for the responses...

Opened the case up today - guess I should've gone that as soon as the problem kicked, but hey, guess that would be too sensible!! :O

Took a closer look at my video card and one of the plugs holding the heatsink in place had become loose and the heatsink was part dislodged on one side!!!

Reattached the plug... gave the insides a general spring clean, and so far things seem to be running swimmingly!!

Ta for the help guys!

Good for you, when in doubt open her up I guess.
And just for the record I was figuring if it was over 50* in the BIOS when not under load then things would probably get dicey when gaming or whatever.;)

whats BSOD, how do you check event messenger???, somthing like this Might solve my shutdown problems that have been going on for 7 months now.

BSOD is abbreviated term for "Blue Screen on Death" - I'm sure you need no explanation as to what that is lol!!!

To get into the vent manager, right click on your "My Computer" icon and select "Manage" - the event viewer and log is accessed from here.

Hope it helps...

oh ok thanks, lol i know what BSOD means now, haha, i recall loads of events when having blue screen of deats, i get sick of them :p, my old ocmputer used to get one nearly every week.

ok, i am in the event manager but dont know what to make of it, there is a gian list in system events log, but is it top of list or bottom wich is the most current event?
